It’s going to be “worse than average” so can we please state a climate change connection? It must be stated everywhere it exists. It cannot be understated. People need to know how it’s impacting them bc we need everyone to mobilize.

Literally NO ONE should have nuclear weapons. I’m so sick of living in a world with a scarcity mindset and so much distrust. Smash the patriarchy. Decolonize everything, including our minds.

The point is that these economies did exist at scale (until colonizers came, committed genocide, and convinced the world that their idea of “progress and development” are the only logical ones). The question for today is how to transform our failing systems; ecological economics is one approach.

Try reading The Serviceberry. It’s full of alternatives that allowed all life the flourish. A key takeaway is abandoning the western mindset of scarcity and competition bc the world doesn’t actually work that way; even dominant theories of economics and evolution are taking on new perspectives.

I saw a post about “Would you really be willing to give up AI? Could you really get thru your work day without AI?!” And I just thought, son, I’m older than Google. I’m schooled in the ancient ways of finding information. And frankly, I miss roaming the stacks.

(2/2) if there’s a breeze, hang a wet towel in the window. It will cool the incoming air. If no breeze, hang it over a floor fan or other sturdy fan.

(1/2) I’m in Portugal and I cannot express how difficult it is to escape heat. The irony of air con is that it increases heat with its emissions. We must address climate change at the root causes! For those of you struggling with the heat, here’s a natural air con tip:

I don’t know if you accept/like DMs… I’m part of a group working on bioregional water councils and support for local (both locally grown and native species) regenerative food systems. I am sure you’re quite busy, but if that interests you let’s be in touch. No worries if not.

(2) Allowing myself to feel; thanking those feelings for drawing my attention to something I care about; and releasing them bc they've done their job and now I will do mine, which is to take action.

(1) Reminding myself that 2 things can be true: there is suffering, and there will be more, BUT ALSO there are people all over the world working on holistic, systemic solutions that support equity and a just transition into this new climate.

🧵 This week I need to focus on my climate grief practice more than ever. Between the devastation in Nepal and the news about passing 1,5 C by 2030 (if not sooner, let's be honest, the UN lags), I am doing two things regularly:

It's important for us to consider how *wonderful* a world without air travel could be. Too often, we see "planetary limits" as limiting our quality of life; but what if we just build a different one, a more beautiful one? taraapierce.substack.com/p/the-end-of...

We must mobilise at a scale not seen since WWII, and we must focus on systemic, holistic, interconnected solutions. (And by solutions, I mean all of it: mitigation, adaptation, but with a vision for a future we can all love.)

I've recently heard the critique that democracy is oppressive. It's adversarial and allows 51% to steamroll 49% in direct democracies, never mind the imbalances w/representative democracies. E.g., the US democracy is functioning exactly as it was designed. Perhaps we need something better.

Exactly! Worldviews based on abundance (Nature’s gifts renew each spring), kinship with Nature, stewardship, reciprocity based on gratitude… it’s all possible. People all over the world have thrived based on the idea that “All flourishing is mutual.” (RWK)

My childhood was filled with my dad’s (often embellished) sailing stories, the true sailing story “Dove”, and this movie. Growing up I always felt out of place, yet I also knew so many of the places that called to me were changed forever. But this. This warms my heart so much.

I’m increasingly interested in how information is shared… bc depending on your location, Google Maps still show Lake Ontario (like in Canada and Europe). What other BS is being served to Americans only?

Non-western cultures give me hope for the kind of transformation we need. Specifically the Indigenous people who are so openly sharing their knowledge and systems of governance. They prove there is another way to see the world and that our assumptions about human behavior are not universal.

This reminds of a commentator who said, well into the pandemic, that the CDC would’ve had more success getting people to wear masks is they’d said “protect yourself” instead of “protect each other”. I wonder how many tragedies we need until we realize we are all in this *together*.

Polluters absolutely should pay; yet despite this principle being one of the oldest in international law, the rest of our laws are in the favour of polluters. But, thankfully, the law is something we made up—and many are fighting to change it for the better, for equity, for justice, for harmony.

I’m such a nerd, I had a dream that I bought 3 books on a topic I’m researching. They had beautiful covers. (Please note I’m rarely in a bookstore with books written in English, so this was a very exciting dream.)

The richest 1% produce more carbon pollution than the poorest 66% of humanity combined. Climate justice isn’t optional. It’s the only kind of climate action that actually works. #ClimateJustice #SystemChange

There’s so much climate doomsday news, what’s your favorite way to invite people to build something beautiful? How do you find joy in the work? How do you appreciate the little things and let them fuel you? Asking for the world.

Safety is the point, so I gave an even safer option. It was illustrated by a real life example of it being so safe somewhere specific that no one wears a helmet. That is not anti-helmet. The NL is not anti-helmet. But this conversation is exhausting, I’ve explained this multiple times. I’m done now.

If he keeps this up, he’s only going to push California away… soft (or hard) secession would be less of a surprise to me with each passing day. I mean, c’mon, this is the state that voted the Ca Coastal Commission into existence after the ‘69 oil spill in Santa Barbara. We will protect our home.

Unfortunately scare tactics have been found not to work. They tend to paralyze, push people into denial, etc. The best approach is inviting people to dance at the revolution.

While I do believe we should be mobilized at a scale not seen since WWII, we are currently on a trajectory of 2.8C warming by 2100 (not 2050) so this headline is a bit misleading. Would either scenarios it be a catastrophe? Yes. But we still can make a difference.

I remember that oil spill. I’d moved away, but my heart broke. It’s insane to me that oil spills, which are absolutely devastating, are considered an acceptable risk when we have solar and wind. Ever seen a “solar spill”?! We call that a nice day.

I am livid. Trump trying to undermine California’s authority is wrong on so many levels—never mind the irony that continuing to produce and burn fossil fuels is a direct harm to national security.

Please dear god let everyone realize not addressing climate change is making everything more expensive, then maybe political leaders might actually have to take action at the level we need because their voters will be livid.

Saying we could achieve infrastructure so safe that no one wears a helmet is not the same as being anti-helmet. No one is stopping people in the NL, my example, from wearing a helmet.

There’s a recently published paper that will help legal cases with attribution. Time for heads to roll.

Tara A Pierce @restoringsustainability.com · 22/08/2026
Everyone here is pro-safety. Infrastructure increases safety by removing threats. Helmets reduce head injury when accidents happen. And here’s the kicker: you can have both.

Tara A Pierce @restoringsustainability.com · 21/08/2026
The Dutch aren’t “anti-helmet” they just have bike- and pedestrian-centric infrastructure (including traffic laws heavily in favour of bikes and people) so they don’t see them as essential.

Also, you’re not a hypocrite or complicit for being born in a system you didn’t create and not living “perfectly green.” If you’re *trying* to make the world better, you’re not complicit, you’re resisting.

I don’t have a problem with mRNA; it’s with Musk’s ability to do unethical and illegal things while making more money than god. And, as Dr Tran noted, claiming to be a smarty pants while clearly never having taken a biology class.
