2026 is the year to see Barcelona. On Feb 20, the Tower of Jesus Christ topped out at 172.5m, making the Sagrada Família the tallest church in the world after 144 years of construction. On June 10, it will be 100 years since Antoni Gaudí's death. Centenary calendar: sagradafamilia2026.org

On Monday, no one knew who he was. By Saturday, the whole city walked him home. June 1926: Gaudí, mistaken for a vagrant after a tram accident, dies in a charity hospital. Two days later, thousands follow his casket to the Sagrada Família. 100 years this June.

Three taxi drivers refused to take the injured man. 1926: a 73-year-old is hit by a tram in Barcelona. Everyone assumes he's a vagrant. Next morning, a chaplain recognizes him: Antoni Gaudí. "I belong here, among the poor." He died three days later.
