We asked off-duty and former rangers how they're feeling. Check out the images for their words.
Text reads: “My heart bleeds for the staff there now.” “Having spent the best 5 years of my NPS career at Big Bend, and having been responsible for the well-being of the park community through the pandemic, my heart bleeds for the staff there now. Not only are they bearing witness to the insensitive destruction of much of the park they swore an oath to protect, but they are forced by politics to do so in silence, else they may be risking their jobs and livelihoods. But THEY ARE NOT ALONE. The country is watching and we will prevent the worst of this.” – Bob Krumenaker, Big Bend Superintendent 2018-2023 and Chair of Keep Big Bend WildText reads: “23 years of being a Law Enforcement ranger at Big Bend. Now I’m ready to throw the award they gave me at a dozer.” “I never thought I would see a construction company have operational control of the park. And they do. If they want an area closure, they get it. Clearing for materials yards? Well, they just do it. No permits, no compliance nothing. Sometimes they tell the park where they are going…as a good will gesture. – Michael Ryan, former BIBE River District RangerText reads "“It just feels good seeing a thing stop” The reason construction paused is because of organizing. I know it’s not over, but its a win. And I’ll take every chance I can get to remind myself that when we work together, we do have power. Even the most heartless of administrations will respond if enough people stand up. It just felt good seeing a thing stop. - anonymous resistance rangertext reads: “We all go to the river” In Big Bend, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the wide open spaces. But within those vast distance, we go to the water- all of us from humans to animals. We all go to the river. One of the most striking features of the Big Bend area is it's biodiversity - so many species of birds, of mammals, of cactus. Cutting off human access to the Rio cuts off our connection to our ancestors and our options for recreation in the desert. Cutting off animals' access cuts off their lives. A wall, or any disruptive and unnecessary construction, threatens this impressive web of life in so many ways.

On 8/17, after public pressure, CBP's commissioner ordered a pause on construction in Big Bend. That's not the end. It's a pause, not a win and now is the time to push harder.
Text reads: whats new? On 8/17, after increasing public backlash (from you!), CPB’s commissioner ordered a pause on all construction in Big Bend until he went out to see for himself. We’re not sure what will happen next, but this is an important step! There is a photo of an excavator in a desert landscape with a large blue clouded skyText reads: so.. did we win? The administration is responding to pressure, but the fight is far from over. This is a pause, not end-game. But it’s still worth celebrating! That means now is the time to push even harder! A photo shows an excavator in a large desert ecosystem, with an ocatillo desert plant visible.

Federal contractors started bulldozing sensitive habitat in Big Bend this month, part of a nearly $2 billion border construction plan, even though this stretch accounts for barely 1% of unauthorized crossings, and has bipartisan opposition.

Freedom 250 isn’t a rebrand, it is a hostile takeover and if you get the “ick” from it, there are a lot of reasons why. We created a guide to help folks understand the difference - A for America250, F for Freedom250. #A250 #F250
Top banner shows the America 250 logo imposed over a green checkmark, alongside a Freedom 250 logo crossed out. Text reads, “Enraged? So are we. Here are some actions you can take: Rangers, resist the Freedom 250 pin. If ordered to wear it, get that order in writing. The American Flag pin is a great alternative! Everyone: Call your congressional members and ask why your money is being directed into a partisan LLC! Educate your friends, family, and neighbors. Spread the word about the difference.”

Now, some park staff are being told they must wear these MAGA-coded pins or face disciplinary measures - pins manufactured and sold by the folks who make all your favorite MAGA gear! 🤢
Two columns of information. The left column has the “America 250” logo at the top: black text reads “AMERICA” and a stylized ribbon forms the number “250. Under the A250 logo, bulleted text explains that A250 was: established July 22, 2016 by Congress (public law 114-196); was created through bipartisan congressional authorization; is a nonpartisan entity officially known as the “U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission”; is comprised of Congress members from both parties as well as private citizens. Under the F250 logo, bulleted text reads: Established January 29, 2025 by Trump Executive Order as a White House Task Force; Created through executive action under a single administration after efforts to control A250 funding failed; a partisan entity officially run by Freedom 250 LLC. Created in December 2025, this private company is now executed by the National Park Foundation & staffed by Trump cronies.

Text under the F250 logo reads: raises money from corporate sponsors and wealthy donors with no transparency or accountability; potential conflicts of interest: corporations donating to F250 have business before the administration; nearly 80 million dollars of taxpayer funds have (so far) been directed into Freedom 250.

Rather than allowing the bipartisan, longstanding America 250 commission to continue, Trump created the “Freedom 250” initiative when his administration discovered they couldn't directly manipulate where the money went.
Text at top reads, “Did you know?” Below, two categories with bulleted list. Category one is “America 250” with a green check next to it. The bullets are: “bipartisan; established by Congress in 2016; financial transparency & public funding; public service & engagement; not perfect, but not terrible.” Beneath that text is the second category: “Freedom 250” with a red circle and “x” next to it. The bulleted list reads: “established by Trump admin in 2025; no financial transparency; funded by private donors to buy favor; whitewashed, distorted history.” At the bottom of the page, a green banner says, “Want receipts? We got ‘em” with arrows pointing right.

Black history. Indigenous history. LGBTQ+ history. Slavery. Climate science. Labor history. Civil rights. These stories are not optional. They are part of the American story. We will not let them be erased from our national parks. #America433 #Juneteenth #HarpersFerry #ProtectPublicMemory
The full story belongs to all of us. America 433+ teach in, Friday June 19th, 1:30-3pm. Join America 433+ and coalition partners for a public teach-in, family-friendly activities, postcards to elected officials, and a call to protect public memory.
The trump administration is erasing the stories that help us understand America while hollowing out the very agencies responsible for protecting them. America 433+ teach in, Friday June 19th, 1:30-3pm, Harper’s ferry national historical park, West Virginia. You cannot separate censorship from the hollowing out of public agencies. When the workers who protect our history, science, lands, and public institutions are pushed out, the public loses. This is a fight over public memory, and the public’s right to know. What we learn in our national parks matters. When signs, exhibits, webpages, and public education materials are removed or rewritten, the public loses access to the stories that help us understand who we are. America 433+.

As the Trump administration censors history and science while hollowing out the agencies responsible for protecting them, we are coming together to say: public lands should tell the full American story, not a whitewashed version of it.
On Juneteenth, meet us at Harper’s ferry national historical park to defend public history, public lands, and the full American story. Harper’s ferry is not just a historic site, it is a place where the struggle over freedom, slavery, democracy, and public memory still speaks to us today.

Rangers already follow strict laws protecting classified information. These NDAs go further — silencing lawful whistleblowing, blocking oversight, and hiding abuse of power.

Bold text at the bottom reads: “This survey is an important record of the personal, professional, and financial costs of illegally firing public servants.”
Slide with olive green background and white text titled “Survey organizers have recommended policy actions.” Bullet points call for accountability and remediation for affected workers, stronger legal protections for probationary federal employees, rebuilding the federal talent pipeline, protecting the federal workforce from politically motivated mass actions, and addressing the mental health consequences of the firings. A concluding paragraph notes that the survey’s purpose is not to influence policy and acknowledges the proposals would not fully remedy the harms experienced by all probationary employees, but could help organizers.

Socha was a corporate executive at Delaware North (or DN), a huge company that runs a lot of the businesses you see in parks. So, remember that awesome park ranger who led your family on a tour last summer? Well, Socha wants to replace that ranger with a private, for-profit tour company.

Since we’ve been talking about unqualified people in leadership roles all week…we thought we’d keep going and tell you all about the current NPS director nominee, Scott Socha.

We know it’s hard to know where Burgum’s fantasy world ends🦄 and reality begins, but we tried to decipher it for you (with sources so back it up!)
Same layout as previous slide. Text reads, “Summary of Burgum’s Claims: What Doug Burgum argued at the hearing:
Staffing cuts aren’t real losses — they’re voluntary or reorganized.
The National Park Service has too many off-site staff.
High gas prices are caused by reliance on foreign oil.
Offshore wind poses major risks to national security and marine life.
He framed these as efficiency, energy independence, and safety concerns.”Same layout as previous slide. Text reads, “Our response: What was presented vs what’s supported: Complex issues were oversimplified into talking points. Measurable impacts were downplayed or reframed as neutral, Risks were selectively amplified in some areas and minimized in others, often w/ blatant hypocrisy. The result: a version of reality that doesn’t fully reflect how these systems actually work. From the people doing the work: The impacts are real, no matter how they’re verbally “softened.” These systems are more complex than a single explanation. The details matter because they affect how parks are protected and run.”Same layout as previous slide. Text reads, “Parks don’t run on oversimplified talking points. They run on rangers.”Same layout as previous slide. A list of sources and hyperlinks

He also thinks Secretary of the Interior thinks he’s in charge of oil, and offshore wind is a national security threat, and harms marine life (but don’t worry the offshore drilling in the gulf totally won’t harm the marine life).
Same layout as previous slide. Text reads, “Burgum Claims: Californians pay more for gas because they import more foreign oil, turning them into an “energy island.” Below, the word “facts” is in all green and states in a bulleted list: Oil prices are driven by the global market, not just sourcing. The U.S. is one of the top global oil producers globally. California (& U.S.) prices are more influenced by refining capacity + supply constraints. Bottom line: This oversimplifies how gas prices actually work”Same layout as previous slide. Text reads, “Burgum Claims: Offshore wind in New England would “endanger our greatest population area” because wind turbines interfere with sonar. Wind turbines require hundreds of miles of underwater blasting, threatening whales & marine life..” Below, the word “facts” is in all green and states in a bulleted list: Offshore wind projects undergo multi-agency review, including defense and environmental oversight. Current research does not show major sonar disruption from turbines. Marine impacts are evaluated through environmental impact studies - protections Burgum helped overturn for offshore oil, threatening the critically endangered Rice’s Whale. Bottom line: Claims overstate risks without strong evidence.”

Main takeaways if you only listened to Burgum’s side of the events - none of the staffing losses in the past year are a big deal 🫠
Image of Jolly Ranger in background, text reads, “Burgum Claims: DOGE had no effect on staffing because everyone got their jobs back, and they were “new employees anyway. The “drama” of the creation of the Wildland Fire Service is overplayed staff is just being transferred. It is not a “dramatic” loss.” Below, the word “facts” is in all green and states: Federal workforce reductions have been framed internally & publically as a way to push employees out. While many departures were labeled “voluntary,” they followed constant instability and pressure. Losses included both early-career staff and experienced employees. Bottom line: Impact was real—even if labeled voluntary.”Same layout as previous slide. Text reads, “Burgum Claims: The NPS needs fewer people at “districts,” regions, service centers, headquarters, etc. He wants people “actually in the parks.” Below, the word “facts” is in all green and states in a bulleted list: NPS relies on regional + national staff (science, HR, IT, cultural resources). These roles directly support park operations and preservation - they can’t function without them. The NPS does not operate on a “district” system. Bottom line: Cutting these roles weakens park operations.”

On April 20th, we all had to hear Doug Burgum spin the truth under oath during the Department of the Interior Budget Hearing. We’re back with another very in-depth fact versus fiction for you, because there is so much to unpack from that hearing😵‍💫

We made this flyer to spark conversation - not to shame. Print it out, put it in your bosses mailbox, send it to your superintendent. And don't let them make you feel crazy. You aren't, and your work matters.
A flyer with the header "Doug Burgum can go fork himself". Text reads:
"whats going on?The DRP comes in a broader context of government
overreach and deliberate traumatizing of federal employees. Why? They
want us gone so they can privatize public lands–but they know RIFing
us would cause public outrage. Plus, most of their incompetent plans
end up overturned by a court. So rather than a RIF, they’re using the
DRP to drive people out. Making our lives hell is a big part of that-
Russell Vought even said they “would put federal employees in trauma.”
The uncertainty around RIFs, threatening reorgs, hiring freezes....
you’re not crazy, it’s a part of a plan to get you to leave. And, they
can go fork themselves. Making this choice. Only you know what you
need. If this work is harming you, that matters.

You can’t resist if you are burned out, miserable, and broken. Do what
is right for YOU. There is no “right” choice. You deserve to feel safe
and supported, and never asked to be put in this position. And–this
doesn’t just affect us today, it shapes what the NPS becomes.Park
staff: We know this makes your work harder, on top of nearly
impossible jobs already. Regional + WASO staff: Don’t let them
convince you that your work isn’t important. It is. If you stay: Hold
the line! Don’t let the bastards get you down.

Slow things down-

put sand in the gears.

Make as many paper trails as possible!

Don’t shame anyone who chooses to leave.

If you go. Don’t give up the fight! Your voice still matters.

Support public lands from the outside!

Share your story and why your work was important.

Be kind to yourself, and support your community. Regardless: Once a ranger,

always a ranger.

What’s happening to parks and public lands isn’t right. The public
deserves to know!

Use your (non-work-affiliated) voice to talk about it. Contact your legislators.

The "best", fastest way to privatize public lands is get rid of us, the rangers who protect them and uphold our mission statement. So their playbook is simple: make our lives hell, then give us an easy out.
A background image of a ranger looking out over a sunset. Large text
reads "fight back". A text box says, "No matter what you decide, the
fight isn’t over. We got them to back down from RIFs (for now) so they
brought back the DRP and are doubling down on consolidation and
“re-orgs” But we see through them.
Our voices, your voices, matter!"

It's no secret why they want a buy-out rather than do a RIF- because they want us gone, but they don't want to face public backlash of gutting the NPS.
A background image of a ranger looking out over a sunset. A large
black heading says "whats going on with the DRP". A text box says
"Once again, the Department of the Interior is trying push out
qualified park rangers who are trying to protect public lands with
another “buyout”, or deferred resignation program (DRP). This time,
they’re targeting the regional and Washington level offices who work
behind the scenes to make it all happen.

You know this but its worth repeating: they want you to quit, rather
than RIF you. But their goal remains the game: push out civil servants
and privatize public lands.

Regional + WASO folks: they gave you so little time to make this
decision, we're sure this week will be hell. Hopefully this flyer
helps spark conversation."

The Trump administration tried to push cuts like this last year and public pressure helped stop it in Congress. We must do this again. No official vote has been scheduled, but we know it will happen in the coming weeks to months.
Image of trees on black background. Text reads, “Instead of funding essential programs across the country, FY2027 proposal creates a new "Presidential Capital Stewardship Program"
within the NPS. It's proposed budget?
$10 billion, roughly 4-5 times the entire NPS annual budget.”
Image of trees on black background. Text reads, “To be clear, The National Park Service has a $23 billion critical maintenance backlog. The proposed $10 billion "DC beautification" budget alone could fix nearly half of it.” Image of trees on black background. Text reads, “We've done this before. Last year, proposed cuts were removed because you made it clear that Americans do NOT want this. We need to do it again. So what can YOU do?”

At the same time, the administration is proposing $10 billion for a D.C. beautification project — funding that could cover nearly half of the National Park Service’s maintenance backlog.
Image of trees behind black background. Text reads, “Flashback to last year:
Proposed FY2026 NPS budget cuts were NOT approved by Congress and removed from the final bill thanks to YOUR help and voice.
BUT IMPACTS STILL HAPPENED.
Since early 2025, the NPS has lost 4,000 plus employees , nearly 25% of its workforce, through layoffs, hiring freezes, and early retirements.”Image of trees on black background. Text reads, “Back to FY2027:
These cuts go beyond the national parks in the Dept of the Interior. NPS, a 25% overall cut, Construction budget, a 72% cut. BLM, a 28% overall cut. Core land management, a 34% decrease. Impacting hundreds of millions of acres of public land.”
Image of trees on black background. Text reads, “Some programs are being reduced dramatically. The Historic Preservation Fund, $181M to $11M (down 94%). National Recreation & Preservation. $91M → $6M (Down 93%). National Conservation Lands, $59M → $14M (down 76%). Along with major cuts to conservation, recreation access, wildlife, and habitat management programs.”

Defunding America’s Best Idea. The proposed FY2027 budget includes a ~25% cut to the National Park Service, along with major reductions to other public land agencies.
Image of Jolly Ranger on black tree background. Text reads, “GUTTING America's Best Idea. The Trump admin is once again proposing massive budget cuts to the National Park Service for FY2027. We need your voice.”Image of trees behind black background. Text reads, “This administration is spending ~$1 billion PER DAY on war. Meanwhile, all 433 national parks sites operate on just ~$9.5 million per day.
3-4 days of war spending equals 1 year of national parks. This isn't about affordability, it's about priorities.”
Image of trees behind black background. Text reads, “You -THE PUBLIC- value protecting public lands, wildlife, and cultural history.
But the FY2027 proposal includes a $736 million cut (down 25%) to the National Park
Service.”
