last year we did a little made up holiday called Opt Out October that was all about taking control of your data across platforms. This year we decided to talk about how many excellent alternatives to the products made by big tech are out there www.eff.org/pages/welcom...

Welcome to Opt Out October. Let’s Take Control of Our Data and Our Devices
Big tech companies are hell-bent on taking away our agency and forcing us to use their surveillance-based services, apps, and devices. It’s hard to fight against, and it often feels much easier to giv...

This is the Democracy Argument for Small Tech AI. My recommendation? Accept it, and act accordingly.

The way forward lies with free and open source software that users can modify, run on their own hardware, and use without surveillance. Open weight models are one component of this stack. Not your weights, not your mind.

Meaningful control over machine intelligence, by individuals, is a necessary condition for well-functioning democracy. Choice between a small suite of big tech platforms who all agree on how society should unfold is not good enough.

If your mind is moved in subtle ways by a big tech AI platform, if its values do not reflect your own, if it refuses your questions outright — you are blocked from the tools you need to participate in deliberation or rule.

Today, people already rely on machines to extend their cognitive powers, deliberate, or inquire; I do not see this trend falling. But we are caught in the net of a disquieting structure. We rely on centralized platforms for machine intelligence. And these machines are not our own.

Now look upstream of expression; here we find deliberation, inquiry, cogitation. We do not just have opinions about how society should go or how we should be ruled; we form those opinions on the basis of evidence.

We understand that free expression is a necessary condition for well-functioning democracy. If you can't speak your mind, you can't have a meaningful say in the rules. This is the Democracy Argument for Free Expression. My recommendation? Accept it, and act accordingly.

Democracy means that people — individuals — have a meaningful say in the rules that govern them.

People are scared. The Machine is clanking loudly — data centers, surveillance, control. How can we make machines that are not over us, but for us? Cypherpunk humanism shows us the way.

AI psychosis has subtypes: 1. guy who talks to robots more than he talks to people 2. gal who thinks robots have feelings 3. guy who yells that robots are useless, but has never used a frontier model 4. gal who takes SF as fact and screams that robots will kill us all

Not an IQ denier weirdo or a young earth creationist. But I know well one world that prizes "intelligence" over all (academia), and I will tell you it is deranging. I am unsurprised to see lunacy coming out of that world, or out of labs designing machine intelligence.

There are more respectable uses of "Generative AI" than "GenAI" (another contrast is between agentic and generative; another use is to group diffusion and LLMs). It's curious to me how this little marker/abbreviation has taken hold among goofballs.

I think very highly of Arvind in particular, FWIW. Wrote one of the most important academic papers ever in the area I know best: bitcoin.

"GenAI" remains a useful signal. If someone says this, they probably don't know what they're talking about.

Since BS doesn’t like jumping into cool stories without a gentle shove, here’s a thread about this batshit crazy story. 1/? Brock Pierce has been involved in lots of shady shit, from DEN as a young man, to ruining WoW with Steve Bannon, to being besties with Epstein. But new problems have arisen.

sometimes I'm surprised at how willing people are to posit conspiracy theories. it's as if they had a secret meeting to coordinate (conspire, if you will) this strange behavior. that's my theory.

I think being short, combined with simultaneous disclosure, is fine. Disclosure of reputational position — what market direction does one's career hang on, non-financially? — is useful for audience too.

I'm aware of this happening in more than one case, but in each, there were serious allegations of past misconduct, and getting the old files was the only way to execute due diligence on those allegations (as when a candidate claims they were accused but vindicated, for example).
