Their stories are personal and explore what can creativity, community, and storytelling teach us about resilience in a changing climate.

Created by Carter Kirilenko and Mitch Bowmile, the film follows Jasper residents Paulette Dubé and Greg Deagle as they turn to writing, photography, and painting to reconnect with themselves, their community, and the landscapes they call home following the 2024 Jasper wildfire.

Thank you, @kamamak_art for sharing your work and teachings with us! Reconciliation is an active, continuous commitment, and we all have a role to play.

Small actions can look like practicing how to pronounce “nâkatêyimiwêwin” or learning about the different Indigenous nations and communities that surround you. Reconciliation can also happen through bigger actions like advocating for policy change and Indigenous rights.

The bee, “amoo ᐋᒨ”” teaches us this and about reciprocity. Across the world, bees take care of each other, the planet and other species, including us, in big and small ways. The path towards reconciliation is similar where it is important to honour both small and big actions.

As we continue to deal with the hard “truth” of “truth and reconciliation”, taking care of one another is vital. For us to reconcile, we must reconcile with ourselves—how we thought the world was and how it is now—, with Mother Earth and with each other.

We are also sharing and reflecting on a beautiful piece of artwork by our friend, @kamamak_art titled “nâkatêyimiwêwin ᓈᑲᑌᔨᒥᐍᐏᐣ” which means the act of taking caring of one another in Cree. Mackenzie Brown, Kamâmak, is a multifaceted Indigenous artist from Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation in Treaty 8.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we invite everyone to take a pause—to learn about the Canadian residential school system, to listen to the stories of survivors, and to reflect on the 94 Calls to Action issued by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

🎒 Take time to get ready for evacuations: - Make an evacuation plan: know the different routes out of your community and have a pre-set meeting place for your family. - Prepare your property: clear leaves, branches, and other flammable materials away from your home and structures.

The Resilience Institute partnered with communities across the interior of #BritishColumbia several years ago, seeking to learn from and amplify the voices of those impacted by the 2017 wildfires. Participants came together from across the province in a journey of healing, reflection, & connection.

But #resilience can also be expressed and created in softer ways. Sharing our stories and uplifting the voices of those who have been impacted by climate-induced disasters inspires others and helps create #transformative change.

For many living in British Columbia’s Interior, the threat of evacuation has become a recurring theme each summer. This #wildfire season reminds us of the urgency of early preparation, effective fire-management practices, and emergency response plans.

Nature-based approaches require long-term #investment. But for many communities facing #climate impacts, funding opportunities remain short-term and project-based.
Large text next to a photo of a tipi reads, "Communities generally support nature-based solutions, but implementation is constrained by funding, governance, capacity, and long-term support." Above in small text reads, "Understanding Natural Climate Solutions as Pathways to Resilience in Rural and Indigenous Communities Across Canada."

When it comes to nature-based solutions and related concepts, the language used matters. Clear, #accessible terminology may be just as important as the technical concepts themselves!
A chart with three sections next to a photo of a bison. The first section of the chart reads, "61% said they were moderately or very familiar with the concept of Nature-based Solutions." The second: "44% said they were moderately or very familiar with the concept of Ecosystem-based Adaptation." The third: "56% said they were moderately or very familiar with the concept of Natural Capital." Above reads, "Understanding Natural Climate Solutions as Pathways to Resilience in Rural and Indigenous Communities Across Canada."
