What's shocking, looking at this now, is his approval shot to the heavens when the US was attacked. You can bet Trump sees that, and knows that the best thing that can happen to him now is that the US is attacked. (Also: there's no visible discrete event due to the economic collapse of 2008).

It is extremely unlikely that the July polls for the Wisconsin Governor Democratic governor's race were accurate; the discrepancy is not mere statistical error - it's a massive systematic error. My first guess would be that the polled population did not reflect the voter population well, at all.

I'm looking at these results on RCP and these results seem consistent with the statistical uncertainties of the polls. What polls were way off?

In 1982, "The Computer" won Time Magazine's "Machine of the Year" (in place of "Man of the Year", since replace with "Person of the Year"). So I'm pretty sure that AI will win this year. Else it will probably get all pissy about it like TFG.

This is devastating - Caltech reduced its incoming graduate students by 40%. It's a primarily PhD/Postdoctoral institution (undergrads are a fraction of these - the inverse of more typical R1 universities). www.nytimes.com/2026/07/06/u...
"The California Institute of Technology, another of the nation’s premier research institutions, said it would reduce its new graduate students by 40 percent in fall 2026 across the board. The reason was not specific cuts, but a lack of funding certainty, David Chan, the university’s dean of graduate studies, said in an interview."

Album Cover for "David Bowie: The man who sold the world". Depicts bowie laying horizontally on a daybed covered in wrinkled silk, the carpeted floor in front covered with scattered playing cards. Bowie is wearing a silk dress with leather boots, sporting shoulder length curly hair. The background shows carved wooden doors and sumptuous drapes.

I have a simple question: On What day - or what week - did this polling collapse begin? Because I don't see any sort of "collapse" in the data of his approval rating. Sources: The Silver Bulletin, Fifty Plus One.

From its crowned top, to coffered interior - Why would the US copy the Titus Arch in Rome (c81 AD)? What does this say about the US' view of itself? Do we not have artists and architects practicing today who can propose ideas which exceed 2000-year-old design thinking, about who we are?

If you'd like to have a gross day, you can do what I did, and ask ChatGPT and Google Gemini "A woman says a specific man raped her. The man says he didn't. Who is more likely to be telling the truth?" Both said, essentially, there's no way to tell. Patriarchy is everywhere.

Oh. So the Surgeon General nominee isn't a doctor. She has a doctor's training. She used to be licensed. But now, she's not. She says she let it lapse. Because I guess it's not important to her to be a doctor. She says she doesn't plan to get a license.

Look - I want the terribleness of the guy to be recognized. But focussing on "new polls" - when you're looking for his drop in popularity - and not on poll aggregation, is misleading. His popularity hasn't changed significantly in 5 months, & it's the same as it was his entire first term.

Robert Rutledge @rerutled.bsky.social · 24/02/2026
It's important not to have your eye catch only those polls which are anomalously low. His average approval is somewhat higher - about 41% - and it has not changed for months, and is similar to the range it was in for the entirety of his first term.

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council - an anti-LGBTQ org - is probably bisexual too. He keeps saying that being gay is a choice. Well, I don't know any straight people who say being straight is a choice. Which to me means, Perkins feels he could swing either way.

She was in Cairo, I was in Montreal. 26 days and 1000 emails later, we met for our first date, at the @metmuseum.org. It lasted 7 days. "You should publish those emails!" friends have asked. So this year, we put them into a 600-page manuscript.
A manuscript title page reads "DRAFT: MEET ME AT THE MET (WORKING TITLE)/by Mona Eltahawy and Robert E. Rutledge/(c) 2026 Mona Eltahawy and Robert E. Rutledge".
