I have invented a new variant of Spider (the patience aka solitaire), which i have named Heptopus after Septopus, the seven-armed octopus. I think it is quite fun, a bit easier than spider but it still takes a bit of thought. I think it's less frustrating than e.g. 'Spiderette'.

How to play Heptopus

The tableau and setup
Use a single 52-card deck. Deal out 7 piles of cards face down, the first three with four cards each and the rest with three each. Turn the top card of each pile up. Divide the remaining stock into 4 face-down stacks of 7 cards each, arranged in two adjacent crosses (++). The two horizontal piles are 'the beak' of the heptopus and you can put any card you like in it... once it is open (ie the first two packets of cards have been used up).

Packing rules
Packing is in descending sequence, regardless of suit. Aces can 'turn the corner' (e.g. a sequence 3-2-A-K-Q etc is allowed). When a face-down card is exposed, turn it face-up. Only one card can be moved at a time, but a sequence of more than one card may be moved as a whole provided all the cards in it are of a single suit (and the move follows the above stated rules). An empty column in the tableau may be filled by any card or same-suit sequence. Free cells may only be filled by a single card at a time.
When a full suit is packed in sequence (e.g. 5-4-3-2-A-K-Q-J-10-9-8-7-6) you remove it from the tableau. When all cards have been removed in this way, the deal has been won.

The two crosses
Whenever you feel it is needed, deal out 7 more cards, using up an arm of one of the crosses. You cannot do this if any of the columns in the tableau are empty. When you have opened the 'beak', the space in the middle becomes a free cell (you can move any card in and out) holding up to once card.
