I’ve just returned home from a trip to visit sisters, then DC to see a loved one. I passed hours just walking. DC is my birthplace. Bob Coronato’s portrait of Russell Means hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. The image is timely.

The Magpie
Pica hudsonia is a singular bird. The magpie has introduced himself to us this summer by circling low through the orchard, landing high on the shop’s weathervane, or perching, teasingly, in an apple tree, all the while communicating by a raucous crow—like caw! Or, resting there, mumbling sweet nothings to us, as though reminding us who’s who and what’s what. He—or she—has a nest somewhere nearby, I suspect.

Keeping our small orchard and the gardens watered this hot and <very> dry summer has kept me from my writing routine. My latest novel was released in May, so I rationalize the break, knowing that I rationalize. Stolen moments in the hut come sweeter.

[PIC] Close up of a person wearing white scrubs holding a frail hand; the patient's other hand grasps the top of a wooden cane [TEXT] Lord, we pray for those who spend their days among the elderly and frail. Please grant them patience when the hours grow long and the work grows heavy. Give them gentleness for hands that wash, lift and comfort, and steady hearts for the losses they carry home with them. Let them see the dignity in every person they serve, and may they know - even on the hardest days - that their care matters. Amen.

Holding Up the Sky
Heat and near drought rule this summer. We haul hoses around, time watering periods for garden, kitchen garden, flower beds, elderberry patches, and row of chokecherries and interlopers—the young boleana tree, Nanking cherries, and honey berries. A pop-up apple start. The yard itself is given short shrift, though I loathe to see it straw-like already, only mid-summer. I accidentally/foolishly left the water on an apple tree overnight last week.

[PIC] A toy house with white blocks lined up next to each, each representing different types of utilities (water, electricity, internet) [TEXT] Lord, help us build a world where clean water is not a privilege reserved for those with enough money. Open the eyes of those in power to see the dignity that is stolen when basic utilities are out of reach. Guide the hands of leaders, engineers and communities working to make access equal and just. Remind us that what flows freely for some is a matter of survival for others. May no family have to choose between keeping the lights on and keeping food on the table. Amen.

“Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!” becomes lions and coyotes and bears, oh my! A friend sent a short reel of a bear cub, maybe a year old, ambling across her in-laws’ old place in the direction of a canyon that divides the land. We live on the other side. In the hills. Our place sits in a narrow valley, divided by a mostly dry creek, a ponderosa pine ridge facing a rockier rim rock on our eastern side.
