Neither I nor my collaborators had funds available to pay for Open Access, even though we very much wanted to make our work as widely available as possible. I was extremely excited when the Development editorial office told me that my University participates in the Read & Publish program. I had no idea! This is an exceptional route to Open Access – especially in these days when the use of extramural funds for publications are being limited.

For this year's #PeerReviewWeek, we want to thank all the reviewers that have participated in BiO's Fast & Fair - an initiative that aims to provide authors with faster peer review decisions without compromising quality.
Biology Open's practice of compensating reviewers is rare and, in my view, contributes to a more respectful and high-quality review culture.

The whole process of publishing with The Company of Biologists in Journal of Experimental Biology was smooth and quick, and I was very happy to discover that Lund University was part of its Read & Publish agreement. Publication fees can be a considerable constraint, especially for early-career researchers like me, so it’s great that there are agreements, such as this one, that allow us to share our work freely with the scientific community. I was also excited to learn that a tree has been planted for our paper, such a great initiative!
