Not only that, but, it turns out what everyone assumed to be immutably linked (sex and gender) are also far more complex and nuanced. The nervous system doesn't always develop in line with the outward sex characteristics. Furthermore, different cultures all have different expectations of gender.

Turns out the ever important 'biological sex' is a bit more complicated than can fit into two boxes. It's more like this: People fall into a curve on a graph with two large humps. It says the character's name on your birth certificate. It says it on your driver's license. Your ability to get certain jobs may be tied to that character. People form relationships with each other and you based on how society understands this TV show and the relationship between its characters.
