rejemy.bsky.social @rejemy.bsky.social · 02/09/2026Haumea is spinning so fast (once every 3.9 hours) that it's significantly non-spherical. All bodies in space do this a bit, but Haumea is pretty extreme. Here's a nice artist's conception: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haumea#...en.wikipedia.orgHaumea - Wikipedia 0131
rejemy.bsky.social @rejemy.bsky.social · 31/08/2026Do you know if there are any links between the traditional Paul Bunyan stories and the Chuck Norris jokes of the early Internet? I found myself thinking of those jokes throughout this episode. 000
rejemy.bsky.social @rejemy.bsky.social · 05/08/2026I do wish pollsters (and the media coverage of polls) made a bigger deal of the inherent uncertainty of polls. At best, we get a footnote with the statistical margin of error. But that doesn't even begin to address systematic uncertainties. 020
rejemy.bsky.social @rejemy.bsky.social · 01/08/2026MoE is 3 points. This poll shows that they're tied, not that Talarico is ahead 000
rejemy.bsky.social @rejemy.bsky.social · 17/07/2026Apparently, for the midterms, no other party has been able to get enough signatures to get on the ballot. So, it'll just be a two person race. No runoff! 020
rejemy.bsky.social @rejemy.bsky.social · 17/07/2026The statistical margin of error is 4.6 percentage points. So, even without taking into account the wide range of systematic uncertainties in polling, this is consistent with a tied race, a Jackson squeaker, or a Bottoms landslide. 110
rejemy.bsky.social @rejemy.bsky.social · 02/07/2026Sure, this guy's weird, and I don't know what the eating in the car thing is all about, but Buc-ee's is an amazing piece of "unimportant" US culture. It's big, it's lively, it's useful, and most of all, it's fun. It's also something we haven't exported, so only visitors get to see it. 010
rejemy.bsky.social @rejemy.bsky.social · 01/07/2026If a majority of the representatives of the people, a majority of the representatives of the states, and the president all think something should be a law, it should. And if it's a bad law, the next set of representatives can replace it. That's democracy! 030
rejemy.bsky.social @rejemy.bsky.social · 04/05/2026I'm an astronomer and I learned parsec as parallax + arcsecond. One parsec is the distance that something has if its parallax measurement is one arcsecond (1/3600 degrees). And the parallax is (roughly) how much an object's apparent position in the sky changes as the Earth moves around the Sun. 050

That's a valid way of accomplishing the sentence-long goal b) I was arguing that there's benefit to a Meals-on-Wheels-like program that wouldn't be captured by just giving people money for food 120
rejemy.bsky.social @rejemy.bsky.social · 28/10/2025One of the points of a service like Meals on Wheels is for people who can't easily make it out of the house. And it gives those people not just food, but someone to talk to for a bit, which is especially important when you aren't able to easily make it out of the house. 130
