The public library hosted Cory Doctorow for a talk. It sold out a massive theatre and overflowed its bike rack on a dark, chilly Autumn evening. This is reinvigorating my faith in humanity. #yeg #edmonton

So while "use UTC internally and local time for display" is often good advice, as a Dutchman living in Canada, you get to notice the cases where it isn't. Like if my birth date is the seventh of the month, don't show it to me as the sixth because our clocks run behind yours. #coding #software

Actively snowing and -12 in broad daylight. Meteorological Spring? My ass! Anyhow, #yegbike wise it's not bad as the snow is fluffy and you cut right through. Presumably it won't be cold and snowing long enough to build the sort of rutted ice cake that can […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

#yegbike bike lane clearing: This morning, 96 St in Delton and 119 Ave in Alberta Avenue were cleared. 96 St in McCauley was not (but no problem riding the road there).

#yegbike wise things were very decent today. Went for my first longer ride since the Tuesday snowdump. From Delton to Victoria Park and back. Most non-priority bike lanes are not yet cleared but residential streets are very well packed. Love the winter wonderland with a blue sky and a February […]

Perfect conditions for a spiked tire coffee run. Add on the lack of cars on the icy roads and it was ideal! #winterbiking #icebiking

Wait, what is this staple of Chinese-Indonesian-Dutch cuisine doing in a Chinese street food joint in Alberta? Even with the Dutch colonial spelling of "ulek".

Today's #yegbike news from me is that the 96 St bike lane in Delton is now cleared. It's very icy but more ridable than the 96 St roadway (but less so than the 97 St service road probably). Still some junk in the lane near 119 Ave which I reported to 311.

Alright #yegbike, it's fabulous studded tire winter biking out there. Surfaces all firmly icy, sunny, not cold, not too warm. I encountered 3 windrows or slushpools frozen in place on my way from Delton northeast to Miller but don't let those spoil the fun.

#yegbike winter report (Delton - Alberta Avenue - Dutch Delicious - Italian Centre): residential streets not getting better with the thaw. 96 St in McCauley finally done. They started clearing 96 St in Delton, did the first block north of 119 Ave and abandoned it working on the block north of […]

As the weather warms, we hope the City will send out crews to scrape the bike lanes to pavement so that they aren't a slushy/icy mess. Please share reports as you move about the city #yegbike! Lots of lanes still haven't been cleared & we hope those get done, including curb cuts! #yegsnowstories

Winter #yegbike report, Delton - Victoria Park: bike lanes cleared along 119 Ave around 92 St and downtown grid except 107 St between 100 Ave and 99 Ave. 96 St in Delton and McCauley still not done. Most residential streets are now packed down and rideable, with just the occasional snirtpool […]

#yegbike report based on Delton - Sherbrooke: things are still hard but improving. Residential streets still all brown sugar in Westwood but getting more packed elsewhere. Still better on the sidewalk; those all clear now. Most bike lanes & MUPs done (Kingsway, Blatchford - NAIT MUP that's not […]

#yegbike report from Delton - Constable Ezio Faraone Park and back: residential streets very, very difficult with heaps of slush. Sidewalks mostly slowly rideable but you have to walk the bike when crossing intersections. MUPs and bike lanes outside downtown core were not cleared. I vehicular […]

Today is my second anniversary as a Dutchman living in #Canada as a Treaty 6 settler. Yes, they're addicted to big vehicles and endless parking lots here, it gets bitterly cold, and dealing with bureaucracies seems clunkier here. But let me also note that moving from The #Netherlands to […]

#yegbike report: 96 St in Delton, 119 Ave in Alberta Avenue, 96 St in McCauley, LRT trail and downtown grid all clear. Somebody's been working hard there on Christmas Day! They seem to realize that clearing to the hard surface underneath wasn't working where the hard surface is ice. They leave […]

The #yegbike report this evening: biking is marginally faster than walking in Delton; around Pleasantview it is not. This is probably because the higher density and narrower streets in Delton make the snow get packed faster. Also, the bluegrass jam that had […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

I am professionally impressed by the IKEA Kitchen Planner tool. Building things like this is what I imagined software developers did when I was a teenager, before I knew it's really all about calling someone else's API by copy-pasting code from LLMs (or StackOverflow before that).

A pet work peeve of mine is user stories where the persona and the want are mismatched, like "As a customer I want to see the ToS" instead of "As company's lawyer I want customers to have accepted the ToS". But are these actually harmful? Would I be helpful or pedantic to advocate for the […]
