Do you measure dissociative feelings? I recall after gallbladder surgery getting morphine then fentanyl and feeling like I wasn’t in my body anymore. Like the pain was there but somewhere else

Idea for a fun Lovercraftian horror short story -- Necronomicon (book of the dead) tricks librarian at Miskatonic University into bringing the book home with him. Librarian looking for bedtime story for his kid reaches into satchel and starts reading to kid while in trance. Dark happenings ensue

What other funding options exist for 'pure' linguistics research that don't involve tweaking the focus to comm or neurological disorders or tech transfer? Is NIH viable in any capacity? I ask as someone who straddles both worlds.
