A spoofed screenshot from Frostpunk, a previous 11bit release, which says: "Your use of AI has had a severe negative impact on your reputation. If only there was a way you could have predicted this". The button to close the popup, which would usually say "Okay", instead says "bollocks".

The thing that drew me to the NFTS was the 100% project-based curriculum. And we made software - not board game/paper mockups. We ended up with like 5 .exes at the end of the course, which was a HUGE draw for me.

I took the Games Design & Development course at the NFTS and, while the teaching was excellent, the thing that landed me my first job was the relentless networking they had us do, and the large number of industry people they brought in. The school has a good rep, so recruiters would come to us.

Kudos to everyone writing sex scenes because they're horny. Do it as often as you like.
Bluesky post: To me it's only pointless when there's no context for why it's happening.

People having sex just because the author got horny? Cringe.

People having sex because of themes in the story that have built up to that moment? Tends to be interesting.

These days, 'indie’ either means solo hobbyist or multimillion dollar companies using the word 'indie' to market themselves, but there are SO many developers in-between: professional, long-term devs who haven't grown into a huge studio – perhaps due to funding or simply because they don't want to.

Like many people here have already said, doing nothing even a remotely related to game dev. I was fortunate(?) to burn out into an industry-wide crash that forced me to do nothing for like 6 months while my wife supported us both.

Back in 2021, PMG reported on the unseen games industry crunch taking place at outsourcing studios in SE Asia. Since then, the companies we looked at have continued to work on some of the biggest games in the world, without any push to improve the conditions of the artists doing that work. (1/7)
The video thumbnail for PMG's original documentary, showing a white, American hand clasping cash in exchange for the labour of a Southeast Asian workforce, represented here as being weighed down by their immense workload.

Part of why Netflix seemingly can't produce anything good or memorable is that "showing people exactly what they want" sucks the life out of artistic creation. No one has their life changed by a movie created in a lab to appeal to their exact marketable demographic.

Truly the most abrasive thing about The Butterfly Site is that people are obssessed with talking about how Things Are Done Over Here in a way that ignores how the platform is built capaciously, allowing many of the same bad behaviors (and actors) from other sites.

I recently did a courtesy call with an indie developer. They wanted to talk to me because their game's target audience is ... uh, me. 25-40-year-old women, many of whom are moms. They wanted to know: what did I need to pick up a game? What would bar me from playing? Here are some answers 🧵(1/?):

I did not anticipate the sequel to the "remain emotionally detached from your pawns" game to deliver so many deeply resonant characters. Some even spoke to me in a way that helped me claw my way out of my own labyrinth. I think you made Good Art on DD2 - I really enjoyed it!!

The one thing this whole debacle has reassured me of is my technical ability. I used to buy into the whole "if you're not pushing keys in an IDE you're not being productive" thing; but hearing very experienced devs talk about how their day-to-day looks a lot like mine has done WONDERS for my mental.

2024 currently has more known games industry layoffs than 2023+2022 combined. 2024 is roughly 600 layoffs away from doubling 2023. There is still plenty of business days left in the month. I can't emphasize enough how extreme these last few years have been. So far.

Yes! LN in particular so so frequently uses its level design to misdirect and then surprise players, and then ramp that surprise into dread. Great pull.

This is different to a speculative application option. At least there you're being honest about the fact that you're not hiring.

Slay the Princess was a good example of this for me. Different characters starting saying the exact words I was thinking, dialogue options that put my nebulous thoughts into clear sentences. All of it grounded in the psychology of close romantic relationships, as well. Took me back to my undergrad!

Has anyone on here implemented full-3D pathfinding? Like, for creatures that can hover or fly. That kind of thing. I've got my own solution I'm working on, but now I'm interested in how other people have tackled this.

It's tough though, right? Enough technical gristle for your most enfranchised players to be able to chew on, without making the game a brick wall for novices. And being in the mix while this kinda discovery is happening has gotta be nail-biting for designers.

Thomas Reiffer @reiffer.bsky.social · 27/11/2024
I'd wager that wavedashing turned out ok because every character had access to it, and only the competitive scene really cared. Further to that - it was another way to express technical mastery, and never felt cheap (at least from what I remember).
110
Thomas Reiffer @reiffer.bsky.social · 27/11/2024
Multiplayer - if the discovery flattens the meta (ie, it just becomes a case of "busted thing" vs "counter to busted thing") then that's when I'd want the developer to step in. If it births a new style and opens up strange new playstyles? That's good juice right there.
110
Thomas Reiffer @reiffer.bsky.social · 27/11/2024
I like when I feel like I've "broken" something, but the game throws so much insanity at me that I don't feel cheap using what I found. Vampire Survivors is my go-to for this. If what you find turns that game into a cakewalk? That's when it feels bad for me. So... it depends I guess 😅.

Thomas Reiffer @reiffer.bsky.social · 27/11/2024
While I was working at Larian the folks there would pester me for the next chapter. The combat slaps, the characters are fun, and the plot is pacey. If you pick it up, let me know! I've put it down for the time being, but will immediately pick it back up if anybody wants more.
