3/3 - Here is our open letter to #ConcordiaUniversity, feel free to share the slides! #montreal #palestine #idfoffcampus #copsoffcampus
1 of 4 - Open Letter Slide that reads:

We, the undersigned Concordia faculty, students, staff, alumni; members of the Montreal community; as well as members of the broader Canadian and international academic community are deeply shocked and appalled by Concordia University's decision to hire the contractor Perceptage for the purpose of policing, surveillance, and targeting their students.

Since October 7, 2023, the university administration has called for a “safe and respectful” space for all, “where we can debate, discuss and explore different, even polarizing, ideas”. Yet we now know that the university hired a security contractor run by a former IDF soldier. Furthermore, employees of this firm who have been coordinating activities with Concordia security include former IDF soldiers or reservists and veterans of the Canadian military. The presence of this Israeli-linked security company on Concordia's campus further intensifies a climate of intimidation, repression and violence that those standing in solidarity with Palestine have been enduring. 2 of 4 - Open Letter Slide that reads:

For over a year, thousands of Concordia University students have mobilized in support of Palestine and in opposition to what the International Court of Justice has described as a plausible genocide in Gaza. Students and their organizations have repeatedly demanded that the university disclose its investments and divest from Israeli apartheid. The university administration has consistently refused students' demands and claimed political neutrality. However, Concordia's decision to contract an Israel-linked security contractor, whose CEO supports Israel's ongoing occupation and war crimes, starkly exposes its one-sided position. In this context, the university's stated commitment to decolonization and to equity, diversity and inclusion rings hollow and hypocritical. 3 of 4 - Open Letter Slide that reads:

The presence of this security company, above and beyond the already heightened policing on campus, is traumatizing for Palestinian and Lebanese members of Concordia's community, many of whom have lost family or have family presently facing displacement, siege and starvation. The militarization of Concordia's campus is also triggering for other BIPOC and 2+LGBTQ members, especially considering that Concordia's Campus Safety and Prevention Services coordinate regularly with Montreal's Police Services (SPVM) - a police force who were, as recently as September 2024, found to be engaged in systematic racial profiling by a Quebec Superior Court judge.
4 of 4 - Open Letter Slide that reads:

The decision by the Concordia administration to hire Perceptage undermines the community-building work which is so vital at this moment in the history of the university. Heightened security and militarized policing should not be the way the university interfaces with its students, staff and faculty.

We, the undersigned, request an immediate end to the contract with Perceptage, and call for full transparency into who was involved in hiring this company and what procedures were followed to procure its services.

US, Canadian universities hire Israeli firms to curb pro-Palestinian protests: Report

A report published on Saturday by the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth says that several universities in both the US and Canada have entered into agreements with Israel-linked security companies to suppress pro-Palestinian protests occurring on their campuses.

The report notes that after the election of Donald Trump, who pledged to penalise academic institutions that failed to control “radicals and Hamas supporters,” a number of universities in both countries turned to Israeli security firms to manage pro-Palestinian protests.Screenshot from an article on Al Jazeera that reads:

The City University of New York (CUNY), a major hotspot for protests last year, has recently signed a $4m contract with Strategy Security Corp. This company, owned by Yosef Sordi, a former New York City police officer, has publicly disclosed his professional training in Israel.

Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, also enlisted two Israeli security firms: Perceptage International, led by Adam Cohen, the former head of security for the Israeli Central Court in Jerusalem, and Moshav Security Consulting, operated by Eyal Feldman, a former Israeli army reserve commander and ex-advisor to the Israeli Ministry of Defence.

#WestBank -based Palestinian journalist / writer Mariam Barghouti on #journalism: "Reporting is not just relaying statements. It is about understanding the smell of a space, the tone of tears, the vibration of laughter. We learn again & again that working in the field means communicating with it."
A simple black and white self portrait of the author, Mariam Barghouti.
Text that reads: ✨I started my journalistic career mostly writing portraits. Portraits of people, then portraits of prisons, then portraits of displacement, then portraits of murder.

✨It’s part of our profession to enter homes as strangers & depart with some of the most intimate details of people’s lives.

✨Mothers broke down in my arms, fathers cried while proudly remembering the mischief of their slain boys, sisters showed me the last present they got from their killed brother. The rhythm repeats.

✨Reporting is not just relaying statements. It is about understanding the smell of a space, the tone of tears, the vibration of laughter. We learn again & again that working in the field means communicating with it.

✨So as journalists we learn to gather the stories in the details of an eye twitch, the stillness of a kid that just escaped an airstrike, & the detainee explaining torture on a map of scars on his body.

✨We enter homes as strangers, & leave with so many precious pieces afforded to us— but all of this is only if we dare to be silent. Silence is the moments where we loosen our loyalties to the questions & find actual answers.Text that reads:

✨So we sit there, in a strange silence. Exchanging glances; speaking without words. Those little moments are the most telling. A moment where the conversations change gears & the story tells itself.

✨In these moments, it becomes piercingly clear that we are not reporting on events. We’re actually reporting about all the lives that have led us to that event.

✨The story of a Palestinian killed is not only a story about a body turned lifeless. It’s about everyone else that came into contact with that life. It’s about their family, their friends, their beloveds. It is also about the life that killed them, about all the lives that facilitated it.

✨The story is about everything that moved between birth & death. The moments of building a home, to the moment it was destroyed, to the moment a child wipes the tears of their grieving mother who is now asking “where the children will sleep?”

But the children are already dreaming of their retribution.

✨I learned that every story is a story of the whole world unfolding.
