That's certainly one aspect. My dad was an ag exec in Texas and my wife's family owned a large ranch in NM, so I'm familiar with the ecosystem. Although they depend on Latino labor, ranchers and farmers will utter racial slurs at the drop of a hat.

Fascinating piece. A couple of questions: You mentioned predation as one reason mothers might carry deceased infants. Is cannibalism by male chimps another possible reason? On the lack of early hominin infant fossils, would mothers have carried dead infants away from the camp to prevent predation?

Declining numbers is undeniable. Personally, I have a hard time viewing it as winnowing. Seems to me that the people leaving Evangelicalism are the people of conscience, while the people staying look the other way and remain "Christian" in demographics alone. Dr Perry would know better than I do.
