i keep thinking abt this post i saw earlier today bc i'm like haha funny relatable sooo true but also like. it sucks if this is true for everyone. i believed it was just me and that there was really a way for me to build confidence but i just hadn't found it yet.

things that are (mostly) true of (most of) my blorbos:

approaches the world with a romanticism bordering on naivety that isn’t always immediately apparent and is in fact at odds with some of their more easily identifiable traits, but nothing they do makes sense without it. selfish at times but fundamentally driven by something larger than themselves

experiences near unceasing strife and misery but cannot meaningfully be described as “cynical” in a broad sense

smart as hell and endlessly curious

melancholic (NOT brooding — their true “woe is me” moments are limited)

they may have rot in their soul but they have at least one person who sees through it and/or who they want to rid themselves of the rot for the sake of

fail and fuck up badly constantly but always try again (the degree to which their further attempts are successful can vary wildly)

dmlx & burda: one of them is enormous, multiple canon paths their relationship can take... RANGE, one of them can die in canon, animal symbolism

dimilix & nrmt: big timeskip during which they feel angstily about each other, one thinks the other is dead for a while, estranged childhood friends, one is a tsundere

nrmt & burda: huge bitch x mythic bitch, annoyingly fancy dresser x normal guy, one of them becomes a single dad in a way that makes me want to die and cry, "dear colleague"

all three: NARRATIVE FOILSSSSSSSS, problematic will to live gap, iconic almost comically gay canon dialogue that's a meme/copypasta in the fandom, can save each other's lives in one way or another, are like sickeningly respectful of each other by the end of canon, just absolutely crazy all-timer angst, not technically "canon" but like..... come on, one has a murdered dad, constantly talking about ech other to other characters, their relationship is load-bearing to the narrative and a huge part of each individual character, hostile relationship for at least part of canon

to no ones surprise i have more to say about this. you can consider this the extremely rough draft of the essay ive been threatening to write for a year

it’s hard for me to describe, but what fascinates me about the way she talks to him is that for as much as its clear that she condescends to him and resents him there are all of these little nuances that i think could only come from a place of some sort of fondness or at least understanding. like one thing i cite constantly talking about their relationship is her p1 letter where she says “you’re pretty smart, did you ever think of becoming an inquisitor??” like obviously that is at LEAST insincere from her and at most a massive insult kldsflj BUT: I DO THINK SHE THINKS HE’S SMART. like it isn’t just that she’s being a huge big faker for all of p1, she peppers in enough genuine (IMO!!!!) compliments to keep him talking to her and trusting her, or at least compliments that have grains of truth to them. he’s naive and ignorant and trusting but he’s not a complete idiot and she doesn’t address him the way she would a complete idiot. if she had nothing but contempt for him their entire relationship would look completely different i mean can you imagine what unmitigated contempt from aglaya lilich looks like jesus christ. one of my favorite moments is when she says “i’m nice to you because i want us to work together but just so you know i don’t have to be like this and i could basically kill you whenever i wanted” and like. that’s true! it’s literally true! she’s honest with him and complimentary of him, she’s just strategic about when and how she chooses to be these things. some people (like daniil) would call that manipulation but as i’ve said before you have to look at the position aglaya is in and ask yourself what her other options were. if she were fully honest with him from the get go it’s not just that she wouldn’t have gotten the help she needed from him, he literally would not have believed anything she said, he would not have BEEN ABLE to believe it. and it wouldn’t have done either of them any good.

carry-over from last image: and: at the end of the day they really do want the same thing. they want to break free of the bounds placed on them by capricious and uncaring masters and to do so with spite and maybe even a little flair if they can manage it. it’s the same masters for both of them. the powers that be hate them both and they hate aglaya even more than they hate daniil and she knows this. the problem is that the two of them see their way out of this situation as literal opposite paths. daniil thinks that’s an irreconcilable difference; aglaya does not.

bachelor: you are obsessed with revenge, aglaya. revenge is a bad companion in the search for the truth.

bachelor: no, i don't. i hate them as much as you do, aglaya.

like you just cannot tell me she isn’t being at least some level of sincere in this conversation. “you can only hold its corpse” strikes me as such a genuine appeal to get him to see why his answers don’t lie in the polyhedron and one that’s coming from someone who both understands what matters to him and can sympathize with the position he’s in from experience. she’s not out to see him lose, she’s out to get what she wants, just like he is, and i think she would be genuinely pleased if she could get him to see that they want the same thing. but he’s too stubborn to see it, he’s too offended, he’s too hurt.

AND HE COULD SEE IT!!!! HE COULD!!!!! HE SEES IT WHEN ITS ARTEMY. even in scenarios/timelines where he can’t be convinced that the polyhedron has to come down he does understand why artemy wants that and he doesn’t hold it against him. ofc this is because he’s down horrific for artemy but also because artemy was basically the one singular person he was right to offer his trust to from the beginning and he respects him and he can see the literal actual physical proof of the value of his worldview in action through the panacea. throw on top of all of this the fact that being down horrific for artemy is another thing he and aglaya have in common and maybe one begins to understand the source of my fixation here

ok i couldn't help myself. only a fraction of my thoughts obviously lol and most heavily p1 influenced

in short my thesis is that yes they more or less hate each other but what they express as hate is layered over more complicated feelings: if aglaya hates him its because she pities him, and because everything that she pities him for is true of her as well, she can’t stand the feeling of pitying herself. she resents him for being an embodiment of her own weaknesses. his ignorance is the only thing she doesn’t share, and i feel like hating him for his ignorance is kind of below her, if that makes sense. hating the poor bachelor for what he doesn’t know is so pedestrian. meanwhile if daniil hates her it’s because he cannot evaluate anything rationally in the face of a betrayal, all he can do is lash out at her, even if she isn’t really the one that put him in this position in the grand scheme of things (this is what artemy calls him out on in the cathedral). she lied to him and used him yes but at the end of the day what’s worst to him is that she hurt his feelings. and why did he have feelings that were so hurtable? because he respected her and he trusted her and he liked her and he thought they were friends.
