The votes go to the firewall. If you stop being the firewall - if you hint you might stop - they’ll go to those who won’t stop being the firewall. Something the CSU seems to understand, for all their legion of faults.

Nameless – Raindance Film Festival 2026
A bizarre crime, in broad daylight, with no obvious motive opens Nameless, and the hunt for the violent, unknown assailant begins. Adapted from the Japanese manga, Nameless plays at the Raindance Film Festival from 20th June. This is not the first film to go by the title Nameless and I’m sure it won’t be the last. But just to avoid any confusion, this one is a psychological horror/thriller based on the Japanese…

What a shocking, inhumane response to a child’s death. There should be no ‘but’ here at all. If the only option a parent can see is to steal to look after a child, then society has failed abominably. And nobody deserves to die for want of a few nappies. Shame on you and your ‘but’.

As a nation, I find we treat our young people appallingly. That includes imposing a curfew on social media (for many its a social lifeline) while not imposing regulation on the extremely damaging content it serves up. Young people punished. Tech giants off the hook - again.

Romanian forms its '-teen' numbers by means of the element -sprezece, from unsprezece (11) to nouăsprezece (19). This construction is very distinctive among Romance languages, and -sprezece may look opaque, but its origin is enjoyably simple: super decem 'above ten' in Latin.

Remember when people hadn’t heard of Baz Luhrmann? His very first feature film Strictly Ballroom makes an entrance in fab-u-lous 4K this month, and it is an absolute delight! From the moment that the red curtains part, revealing the high-octane, sharp-elbowed world of competitive ballroom dancing, viewers of a certain age will know that they are in for a treat.

FIFA has now confirmed that Artan will no longer be able to officiate at the World Cup, which like for players, is the biggest moment in the lives of referees. FIFA has said it is nothing to do with them, but a decision made by US authorities and that the decision is not likely to be changed.

Film Review: Memorizu (2026)
A touching and very human debut feature from Japanese writer/director Miiku Sakanishi on connection with others and how (and why) we capture memories to preserve moments in time. Memorizu has its World Premiere at Tribeca Festival on 6th June. Director Miiku Sakanishi sets the tone from the outset of his feature debut, with the opening images showing different people sitting looking outwards as the sea and landscape are framed in the window of a ferry.

Film Review: Köln 75 (2026)
A German teenager unexpectedly organises one of the greatest jazz events of all time, involving Miles Davis’ keyboard player and a gang of her friends. This ‘based on a true story’ madness is the background to Köln 75, a story which, if it wasn’t true, you’d be hard-pressed to make it up. I think that director Ido Fluk was going for a bit of a free-flowing, fluidly structured film in homage to the jazz music that…
