Who are you writing for? Who’s your audience? Not demographics. Not “the market.” Hint: You are the audience. Bigger hint: Who are YOU? What makes you laugh, angry, scared, obsessed? You are your audience. Figure that out and it leads you to the stories only YOU can tell. #screenwriters

I’m bone-weary of talking about how bad it is for writers right now. So I’m doing what I did during the pandemic, creating space for us to gather. If you’re in NYC, ask me about Script Salon: a free monthly workshop where writers hear their pages read by actors. #tvwriters #screenwriting

Warner Bros. Discovery Access Writers Program. This picture was five years ago. I'm still on the website, still the first face you see. It's a weird flex and it tickles me every time someone tells me I'm still up there. And I'm still here writing! #screenwriters #tvwriters

Yes, vertical mentorship matters. That established writer can become incredibly important to your career. But don't miss the people sitting beside, trying to get to the person at the front of the room. At its smartest and most accessible, mentorship is left to right. #screenwriters

In a screenwriting workshop I was teaching, a writer said "I wrote some shame pages this week." She didn't want to show up to class with nothing. I actually love that phrase. Shame Pages! Listen: by any means necessary. Shame pages can be revised. Having no pages cannot. #screenwriters

Don't compare your first draft to somebody else's final product. The movie you love went through drafts, notes, production, editing, performances, music, the works. Comparing page 42 of your rough draft to a finished movie is not fair to yourself #screenwriters

I Don’t Want to Make a Hollywood Movie. I hear that from writers all the time. My first reaction is: Why not? My second reaction is: Then don’t. Some writer spend so much time trying to prove what their movie isn't that you they forget to figure out what it is. #screenwriters

Pitching is not just about what. It's about why. Why you? - Your unique connection to the material. Why now? - Make it relevant and urgent. Why this story? Out of all the ideas living in your head, why did this one demand to be told? #pitching #screenwriting

It hurts to say no. What if this is my big opportunity? But my gut's loud and clear — something don't feel right. Lesson: listen to your instincts. The money's ain't worth it. Anyone else walk away from money 'cause something felt off? Or say yes and it bit you in the arse? 🤣 #filmmakers

I've had to learn the hard way - when you sell your project, it is sold. It belongs to someone else. They get to decide. I did that and even though it got made, it became a nightmare. If you don't want other people in charge of your vision, don't sell it to them. #screenwriters #filmmaker #realtalk

Writers ask me - how they know when an outline is done? I know where my protagonist begins emotionally. I know what journey they're taking. Have I earned the ending I want to see? Even thought I know there are holes. I go to script. How do you know when your outline is done? #screenwriters

When you get a chance to connect with someone you're excited about meeting, don't talk AT them, talk to them. Ask questions - LISTEN. If you're just looking for the opportunity to talk, you won't hear what you need to move the relationship forward. #filmmakers #takedeepbreaths #screenwriters

Some of the most important writing you do doesn't look like writing. It can be taking a walk, staring out the window, or watching Golden Girls for the 50th time. Your brain is doing the work. Eventually, you gotta hit the keyboard. Blanche isn't writing the scene for you. #screenwriters

I’ve been calling myself an overthinker for years. Lately, I'm not so sure. Maybe I’m not overthinking. Maybe I’m just thinking. Learning to remove the judgement process in my writing. How about you?

I'm reading a bunch of short film scripts right now: Short films are not mini-features. They are not proofs of concept. (I said what I said) They are not a scene from your feature. They are not cliffhangers. They are there own fully executed idea. They must have a beginning, middle and END.

It's nonsense - "From idea to rough draft in 4 weeks" It's the romanticized notion that there are short cuts. There are NONE. You pay your money. 4 weeks later you don't have a script & you feel like shit. You are being set up to fail, just to get in your pocket. #screenwriters

Writers - all notes are not the same. Notes about your WHY: vital Notes about WHAT to do instead: dangerous The solution is yours to find. Make them ask you questions, not give you answers. #screenwriters

I asked AI How do I make my script better? Homeboy said: Delete these 4 phrases to make your script read 10x faster: "We see..." "Begins to..." "Suddenly..." "Is walking" Just to be clear, NONE of this will help you. AI is a bad writing coach. Stop listening to it. #screenwriting

Your first draft has one job: to exist. It doesn't need to be good. It doesn't need sharp dialogue or perfect pacing. It just needs to be finished. You can fix a bad script. You cannot fix a blank page. Give yourself permission to write the messy version so you actually have something to rewrite.

You are way more valuable to others when you choose yourself first. When you constantly put others ahead of your own sanity, your creativity, and your peace, you aren't giving them your best. You're giving them your leftovers. Protect your time. Protect your peace. Make room for your growth.

Act Two isn’t the middle. It’s the heart of your story. If it drags, the problem usually isn’t structure. Your character doesn’t have enough to lose. Raise the internal stakes, not just the external ones. #screenwriters #tvwriters #filmmakers

What my first short film taught me - 30 pages, 8 locations, 4 day shoot, 60K. Thought I was gonna drown. But we finished. 2nd film, 12 pages, 3days, 2 locations 10K. 20 plus years later... Finishing isn't the reward. It's the education. What did you learn from your first projects? #screenwriters

What’s the worst screenwriting advice you ever got? I’ll start: “Write the action lines cleaner, I don’t care how they feel, just tell me what happens”

Which character in your current script are you most like? And which one are you avoiding writing honestly? I’ll go first: I always write the character who does for others and thinks of themselves last. Takes me 3 drafts to admit that’s me on the page. Every time 🤣 Your turn. ↓

Screenwriting myths that are keeping you stuck 1. You need a perfect logline before you write 3. Act breaks have to hit at exact page numbers 4. Your first draft should be good 5. If it's been done before, it's too late 6. You need to be in LA to make it happen What are you stuck on?

A screenwriters voice - it's not something you invent, it's something you uncover. It's already there. If you keep writing, one day someone will say to you - I love your voice. If it happened to me, it can happen for you.

Writer's block doesn't exist. What does exist: Perfection paralysis. Fear of the bad draft. Saying you have it makes you obnoxious, not special. Have you ever heard of plumbers block? NO. Because they show up and they do their job. Do yours. Write. Agree? Disagree? Push back. I can take it. ↓

Ask these 2 questions about your protagonist: What do they WANT? (External — the goal) What do they NEED? (Internal — the truth they're avoiding) If the answers are the same, you don't have a character. You have a function.

This isn't about defining those notes, you've heard them all before. It's about learning what they actually mean, how to implement them. If you've ever walked away from feedback thinking, "Okay... but what do I actually do?" this workshop is for you.

No such thing as writer’s block. You have perfection paralysis. You’re scared the next line, won’t be as good as the version in your head. So you wait. The fix isn’t inspiration. It’s permission to write badly on purpose. So you can finish it! Give yourself that permission today. #wrieon

Your first ten pages are making a promise. Not that the story will be exciting. You don't need an explosion or a car chase. Show the reader you know whose story you're telling, what they want, and where you're taking us. Clarity earns trust. Don't be clever, be clear.

The biggest problem with most first 10 pages isn't the writing. It's clarity. If I don't know whose story I'm watching and what they want, I'm not hooked. I'm confused. What's the first thing you look for when you read a script?
