Just watched Fall of the Roman Empire. A 3 hour spectacular epic mess, but does show Stephen Boyd berating the Senate for supporting a maniac. It concludes by stating that Empires are destroyed not from without, but within. And to be fair to Commodus, at no point does he clear off and play golf.

This just seems so painfully obvious. Political honesty may be difficult. The rightwing media may scream and shout. But would that really be worse than being braver, taking a few short-term hits but making life genuinely better for us all?

Extract from article:

It could be honest: honest about Trump and honest about taxes. It could state clearly that Europe is now alone, without American support. We therefore have to rearm at a much faster pace than we were previously willing to contemplate. This means we must raise taxes as part of a patriotic effort in which everyone is expected to do their part.
This response would require a much closer relationship with Europe than Labour is prepared to admit. Moving closer to the EU would boost our trading prospects, our growth, our military procurement, our domestic producers and our shared defence. It would mean encouraging the American knowledge base to come to the UK - speaking directly to the experts currently being targeted by Elon Musk in US universities and public bodies and telling them to move to Britain.
In short, it means embracing the upsides of this crisis. But we can only do that once we're honest about the fact that it is a crisis and why it is happening.

Beautiful thread on one person's journey to #bobdylan. Mine was like a religious awakening. I was 17, in LA—after HSC—omw to New Orleans & staying with some ppl. Needed music for the road & went through their LPs. Saw Greatest Hits & played it & I suddenly understood the meaning & potential of life.

Apropos of nothing, watching Twixmas TV in the UK and a docu. on Dame Maggie Smith. Great actor lots of black and white TV interviews from the 60/70s. She smoked like a chimney. As an ex-smoker, it felt quite nostalgic. If Professor Chris Whitty said it was OK, I'd be in like Flynn.
