Sometimes I like to take an arbitrary common word and swap it out with “yaoi” Great yaoi conflict Separation of yaois Yaoi corrupts X to the yaoi of seven If you only knew the yaoi of the dark side You’ve got the touch, you’ve got the yaoi No one man should have all that yaoi Yaoi to the people

The thing that unlocked close reading for me as a dumb teenager was a few teachers who taught scrutiny of sources and intent as "meta" for literature. A blackhatway of seeing a hidden dimensionality to what's on the page. Machiavelli and The Prince in their historical context are a perfect example

The Wall by Marlen Haushofer Many themes and interpretations have been applied to this one since the 1960s, but the one that stands out to me above all others in 2026 is Multiplayer Gaming

- Revisionist historical fiction - Uses gaps in sources to imagine whole new motivations for IRL historical figures - Focuses on private adviser to volatile monarch - Plebeian rising to height of power - Uses adviser role to backdoor vast societal upheaval - Everyone here historically gets Bad End

I dreamt that there was yet another mountain lion loose in the streets of San Francisco but when TV news showed footage of it dashing past the cops there was a freeze frame and zoom in revealing it was Ray Smuckles

One of the most remarkable things about Goodbye, Lara is that it starts out looking and feeling exactly like a prestige anime from 1991, but concludes looking and feeling exactly like a prestige anime from '97-'99

Shinozaki-kun's Daily Maintenance by Burio Michiru(鰤尾みちる) Among the great everyday-life-of-mages anarcho comedies in tradition of Witch Craft Works. Intriguing concept of magic as scholastic learning + instinctive ability to sculpt energy. Funny characters explored deeply (no pun intended)

I dreamed that there was a game titled Joan of Arc Tactics from the 90s. I then found out there actually WAS a tactics game about Joan of ARc but it was not what I saw in my dream

Even when I wrote something that (to me) was pretty straightforward, readers were saying that they weren’t able to follow the plot. The lesson here is to be vague and odd and obscure as you want because even when you think you’ve made things clear, it won’t be.

Reading Mishima, Celine, and Malaparte frustrates me greatly. Not because of the contents of the novels or the nature of the authors, but because it reminds me that if anyone has conspicuously stopped producing great art in the modern era it's been fascists

I knew I recognized this kind of energy from before. Historical fiction that sticks to the events as they happened, but roots through all the lacunae in the historical record and recontextualizes events and motivations into what's effectively a whole new story
