📢 ING, you acknowledge rightfully that no new LNG terminals should be built. Yet, you remain Venture Global’s 1st financier globally. It is now time to take the next step and exclude corporate financing for companies developing new LNG terminals and oil & gas fields from all financial services.

Reclaim Finance @reclaimfinance.org · 14/09/2026
It was seen as an encouraging first step. 🚨 But now, ING has breached this already-too-weak policy by providing financial support to Aker BP and Vår Energi, which describe themselves as pure players.
120
Reclaim Finance @reclaimfinance.org · 14/09/2026
3️⃣ Policy breach: In September 2024, ING announced it would end providing financial services to pure player companies. This policy was highly limited: it ignored integrated companies (including oil & gas majors) leaving over 70% of current upstream oil & gas expansion untouched.
120
Reclaim Finance @reclaimfinance.org · 14/09/2026
As a positive result, ING did not get involved in the FID of Venture Global’s highly controversial and contested LNG export terminal project CP2 in Louisiana early this year. But it doesn’t prevent ING from contributing to an incoming toxic LNG over-supply in other ways, as these deals demonstrate.
120
Reclaim Finance @reclaimfinance.org · 14/09/2026
🚨 ING is involved in both deals, which demonstrates the loopholes in its policies. The bank’s new exclusion policy for new LNG export terminals has been effective since the beginning of this year.

2️⃣ New toxic financing: Our team has detected a US$555M RCF, with a duration of 7 years, signed on 22/06 by the liquefied natural gas (LNG) developer Venture Global Calcasieu Pass, as well as a US$3bn RCF for Venture Global, the world’s largest LNG developer, signed on 2 September.

In recent days, news about ING has really caught our attention for these 3 reasons: 1️⃣ ING will be judged: The Dutch judge just ruled that Milieudefensie can continue its climate court case against ING. The NGO is holding the bank accountable for its central role in the climate crisis.

📢 Members of the European Parliament have the power to keep fossil fuels out of sustainable finance: we call on them to reject the Council proposal, and to maintain fossil fuel exclusions in the SFDR. Investors need science-based, clear & credible guidance to actually support the energy transition.

Reclaim Finance @reclaimfinance.org · 24/06/2026
📉 Imagine how much money Europe could lose over companies that are massively investing in fossil fuel production instead of companies actually working for the energy transition?
100
Reclaim Finance @reclaimfinance.org · 24/06/2026
If this proposal goes through, oil and gas companies will be able to claim they are supporting the energy transition and will benefit from ‘transition’ funds.
100
Reclaim Finance @reclaimfinance.org · 24/06/2026
🚨 These dramatic changes have largely been inspired by TotalEnergies, who secured support from the French government and extensively lobbied EU stakeholders. This happened after the company had been convicted for greenwashing by a French court and recognized having no CSRD compliant transition plan.

Reclaim Finance @reclaimfinance.org · 24/06/2026
Their proposal includes: ❌ replacing the strict exclusion of companies developing new oil & gas with a 20% capex threshold in activities aligned with the EU taxonomy ❌ requiring partial decarbonization targets from oil & gas companies, leaving behind the vast majority of their carbon footprint.

🔴 Yet only 5 out of the top 65 banks have LNG export terminal exclusion policies, and even these policies have major loopholes. 📢 For the people and for the environment, banks must urgently commit to stop providing any type of financial services to companies developing new LNG facilities.

LNG is a particularly fast-growing segment in midstream companies, despite its impacts on health, local livelihoods, biodiversity, and climate. Moreover, as Donald Trump is using energy as a lever for domination, increasing financing for fossil fuel also reinforces dependency and geopolitical risks.
