I'd like to sell more books and write more books. It would be lovely if it got to the stage where it wasn't a huge effort to sell just one book.

The Design of Books was an interesting and informative book on book design, cover and interior for different kinds of books. I liked its accessibility for non-designers - it steps through books and explains terms and considerations for readers and self-publishers.

I went to a talk by Tristan Bancks at Apple Sydney on storytelling and how to use Freeform to work through story ideas. He's an interesting speaker and gave some useful tips for writing, including free writing and storyboarding. If only the iPads were free not just on loan!

Sometimes you have a day when both good and bad news comes. I had some disappointing news. I also had someone order multiple copies of both #Septopus and Princess Hayley's Comet. Thanks for putting much-needed sparkle in my day! Order at owltitude.com

On Gallant Wings by @drhelenedwards.bsky.social is a WWII middle grade historical fiction bringing up the dilemma of whether wrong things can ever be right, exploring how families were affected by the Darwin bombing, and exploring the wartime pigeon postal service. Very interesting read.

Yet you're still expected to do all the marketing. Not to mention carry all the other expenses as you're not going through a publisher. There has to be some better way for this to work.

The annoying thing that many of us authors, especially self-published authors, find, is that even when self-published there are so many others who demand a hefty cut of your sales yet you seem to be doing all the work. Platforms for selling. Distributors. Bookstores.

Legend of the Lighthouse Moon @drhelenedwards.bsky.social - is a middlegrade historical tale that blends mystery and magic, set at a lighthouse. I love the sea atmosphere and the warmth that pervades the book - a beautiful sense of family while exploring the magical environment.

- Try topics that excite you - Biographies/memoirs of interesting people - Children's/youth non-fiction, picture book non-fiction - 'Fun facts', trivia Try getting recommendations for something non-dry, but give a topic area. Do you want music, art, a certain period of history, maths?

A super sad book. So impactful in just a slim volume. I think about how short it was yet so much happened, how the relationships and emotions were portrayed so meaningfully, how thought provoking it was, how it portrayed the class differences ... Superb story.

My top tips for #NationalStorytellingWeek: 1) Write the story YOU want to read. 2) No writer can write a perfect story in one draft. You need to write, read, edit, rewrite. Rewriting IS writing! (see art below, by Charles M Schulz) 3) Whatever happens - NEVER GIVE UP! sfsaid.com/2017/01/thre...

Children's books are everyone's books! I told this to someone just the other day. You can derive much from reading children's books as an adult. And if you read and enjoyed a book as a child, if it was great it often lives on inside you in adulthood. Even when you're not thinking about it.

In terms of questions, start with your idea and think of questions a reader might have. Why does she do that? What would he do next? How does she feel about that? Would he pick that or this? Where would they go next? What would make sense to happen if X does Y?

There are many different ways to start. Write an outline Start writing a scene and see where it goes Do some research on stuff related to thoughts on it, jot down notes, see what unfolds Ask questions to develop the story Mindmap, draw pics Character profiles Figure out the ending, write toward it

1. Check you have the ingredients. 2. Run down to the supermarket in a panic. 3. Modify the recipe because supermarket didn't have 'that item' and convince yourself it won't really matter.

I agree, very good point. I don't think I have got the balance right ever, I've moved from extremes. But it's good to get some short term wins/see those milestones to keep you motivated while also planning longer term for the big picture, and I need to work on that more.

Excerpt from Nine Nasty Words by John McWhorter. I have a fantasy that someone 'fires my ass' someday so I can say this!
Excerpt from Nine Nasty Words by John McWhorter. 'The boy ate the ham - you put the accent on ham. But here, it isn't 'I'm gonna fire your ASS,' but 'I'm gonna fire yer ass.' That is, you accent your ass exactly as you would accent - or better, unaccent - you. This means you ass means you, and thus your ass is a pronoun. You only notice the butt facet if you have occasion to think about it. No one sane would ever respond, 'Okay, but even if my ass is fired, the rest of me will still be coming back to work, and I hope you don't mind me working assless.'
