A clear Montana stream runs shallow over a broad bed of rounded stone, the sunlight breaking across the moving water in thousands of sharp silver flashes. Beneath the transparent current, brown, gray, and amber rocks remain plainly visible, distorted only slightly by the ripples passing over them.

Dense willows and grasses crowd both banks in the rich green of midsummer, giving way to a scattered stand of dark conifers and taller pines. Beyond them, forested mountain slopes rise quietly along the horizon.

Above everything, enormous cumulus clouds build vertically into the deep blue sky, brilliant white where they catch the afternoon sun and blue-gray within their shaded folds. Their size gives the scene a distinctly western scale—cold clear water, green mountain vegetation, timbered slopes, and a vast Montana summer sky gathering clouds overhead.
