Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 29/09/2026Full benchmark, thoughts, and code: readysetcloud.io/agent-memory... Sponsored by Oracle and Oracledevelopers. Opinions are my own. 000
Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 29/09/2026My main takeaway is to not add AI components because that's what articles on the internet or speakers at conferences say to do. Benchmark them. Every reranker, model call, and retrieval stage needs to justify its latency and complexity. 100
Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 29/09/2026Going from 20ms to 600ms meant a roughly 30x the latency for almost no gain. 🤯 Which is a pretty expensive way to make a system look more sophisticated and harder to maintain (in more ways than 1) 100
Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 29/09/2026Hybrid search + reciprocal rank fusion gave me a strong baseline relevance at around 20ms. But when I added the reranker, latency jumped to almost 600ms. Relevance for hybrid search basically stayed the same. (btw highly recommend this article for this: fandf.co/4heAs04)fandf.co 100
Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 29/09/2026I benchmarked lexical, vector, and hybrid search. Then I put a cross-encoder reranker on top of each, exactly like what conference talks tell you to do. But that didn't really improve things like I expected it to. In several instances all it did was increase latency 🙃 200
Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 29/09/2026Adding a vector store will make your agent's memory dramatically better, right? Not necessarily. I recently did some benchmarks on retrieval methods and am genuinely surprised at the results because they contradict every talk I've seen on production RAG 🧵 100
Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 14/05/2026I wrote the long version with real scenarios for each vector, and where Teleport Beams helps address these issues for a truly secure agent environment. Thanks to Teleport for sponsoring this post, it was really fun to write. www.readysetcloud.io/blog/allen.h...readysetcloud.ioLocal agents scare me | Ready, Set, Cloud!I built an AI agent with its own identity, MFA, and scoped credentials. It's still not safe. Here's why local is the wrong place to run it. 010
Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 14/05/2026These aren't identity problems. The best identity model in the world doesn't close any of them. But what does help is moving the agent off your machine entirely. Ephemeral runtime. Fresh environment per task. No accumulated state except what you give it. 110
Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 14/05/2026Persistent state. The agent you wrote on day one isn't the agent running on day ninety. Three months of cached outputs, tmp files, installed packages, and retained context cause accidental drifts in behavior. Local agents have no off switch. 100
Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 14/05/2026Poisoned context. An attacker can compromise your agent through a log line, a doc, or a PR comment that your agent will read tomorrow. The audit trail will be correct. It will just be correct about the wrong thing. 100
Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 14/05/2026Network adjacency. The agent has access to your routing table. It can reach the VPN you forgot was up, the dev cluster on the office subnet, the printer, the smart outlet connected to the toaster. Identity says who's asking. It doesn't stop the asking from happening in the first place. 100
Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 14/05/2026Shared userland. Your agent runs as you. Same npm cache, same env vars, same file permissions as everything else on the machine. A compromised tool is contained to your user account, which means it's not contained. 🙃 100
Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 14/05/2026I built a local AI agent with its own identity and thought I was doing security right. Boy, was I wrong. Identity is one layer. It doesn't close the four attack vectors that come with running an agent on your machine. 🧵 100

Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 11/05/2026It tracks with what @spacelift.io (the host) is building: an orchestration platform for both traditional IaC and AI-provisioned infrastructure. AI, IaC, and GitOps combined so devs ship fast and platform teams stay in control. 100
Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 11/05/2026IaCConf genuinely impressed me with how it captured where IaC is headed. Emerging patterns, new tooling, what production pipelines actually look like at scale. 100
Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 11/05/2026The crowd was engaged, the questions were sharp, and a reporter from The New Stack ended up publishing his takeaways. Best response I've ever gotten from a conference talk. 110
Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 11/05/2026Last year I gave a talk to the largest audience of my career on a niche topic I'm uniquely qualified to speak about. At IaCConf 2025, I spoke about what happened to Infrastructure From Code in front of ~650 people. 🧵 // sponsored by @spacelift.io 100
Allen Helton @readysetcloud.io · 26/03/2026We're giving AI agents access to prod. And that often means long-lived keys sitting in an .env. I almost did the same.
