It's amazing the kind of split-brained gymnastics these people must perform to oppose genocidal occupation in Palestine and, in the next breath, call for accepting it in Ukraine. Is genocidal occupation bad or not? Should it be resisted or not? Make up your mind. www.open.online/2026/09/20/f...

Just look at this passage. In one breath, Buttigieg says we need to ban gerrymandering. In the next, he observes that we *had* a ban on racial gerrymandering, which the Roberts court simply dismantled. It should give one pause about the power of words on parchment to solve our problems.
Buttigieg: Yeah. So we ought to ban gerrymandering nationally. We ought to ban gerrymandering.

(Applause)

And the last reason to have any hesitation about doing that fell when they gutted the Voting Rights Act in the Callais decision, because there was, up until then, an argument that, Look, because these states are badly gerrymandered anyway, the only way we’re getting minority representation is to protect minority districts. Now the Supreme Court has basically established a de facto right to partisan gerrymandering. We can have a law that changes that, right? The role of money in politics, obviously part of the problem here. These are not things that are completely beyond our power to deal with.

Taibbi's definition of "horrible" might be a tad different from that of an immigrant family hiding in their house to evade Trump's secret police, but let's not forget that things are tough for him, too.

BTW, immediately after this passage he proceeds to complain once again about liberal censorship.
For instance, we’ll soon come up on the ten-year anniversary of Peter Beinart’s 2017 “The Anti-anti Trump Right” column in The Atlantic, which defined most anything that isn’t explicit opposition to Trump as “evading the reality” and “opposing the people who oppose Trump.” Under that logic, just about anything could be dismissed as throat-clearing on the way to a refusal to Say The Required Things, about Trump. This half-clever formulation arrived in sync with a large chunk of American academia electing to purge the social sciences of “objective” pursuit of knowledge, or what one Literature professor derided as the act of “intentionally [dissociating] their work from the political and ideological exigencies of the time.”The good professor’s essay was part of a “State of Scholarship” report formulated and promoted by the chancellors of Vanderbilt University and Washington University of St. Louis. Naturally, that report has already been denounced as a “diabolical” attack on academics who are “critical of configurations of power in the Trump years.” Call it anti-anti-Trump academia; even the simple observation that Anna Karenina will probably always be a great book offends someone’s current politics.

Taibbi laments how “boring” he finds Trump’s autocratic assault. This is a guy who spent the Biden years hyperventilating about phantom censorship by liberals. But actual, bona fide authoritarianism by the right? It’s just too dull to even think about. www.racket.news/p/on-escapin...
A writer’s most unforgivable sin is being boring, which makes saying anything in this time period tough. Whether you’re reporting or commenting, the game is up once audiences are able to classify according to current political taxonomy. You can publish 50 words or 5000, but what you’re producing for most audiences is a compass heading, showing where you reside on a map in relation to Donald Trump. Maybe you wanted to say something else, but the compass reading is the only thing most people care about, so that’s how the thing will be compressed, summarized, and circulated.

It’s fine if you find talking about Donald Trump interesting, or if it’s important to you that neighbors and family receive an unambiguous signal about where you’d like to place yourself on the TrumpScape. You can put out a strong “against” signal in legacy media – that’s allowed – while almost any other strong statement is interpreted in the other direction.

"Making Bestiality Okay Again." Seriously, if I hear one more pundit complain about the Democratic Party being "out of touch."
The FBI previously refused to hire job applicants if they admitted to hiring sex workers or stealing from an employer — or engaging in acts of bestiality.

Today, those acts, which are mostly illegal across the country, are no longer automatic deal breakers for applicants to the nation's top law enforcement agency.

In June, the FBI quietly lowered some of the standards it uses when it conducts background checks on would-be federal agents and other personnel. According to multiple sources briefed on the matter, the FBI did so to facilitate hiring in some cases, even if candidates acknowledged they engaged in sexually deviant activities or stole from an employer.

This is a myth. Like any powerholder, a dictator needs the support of other elites to prop up his regime. In this sense, his power is more akin to a temple than a fortress. The Pantheon would not remain upright without its pillars. Topple those pillars and watch it collapse.

Today I learned that Charles Murray, the author of race pseudoscience treatise Mein Kampf (1925) – sorry, my bad, The Bell Curve (1994) – once burned a cross with his buddies. A bit on the nose, if you ask me. 1/2 web.archive.org/web/20190714...
While there is much to admire about the industry and inquisitiveness of Murray's teen-age years, there is at least one adventure that he understandably deletes from the story -- the night he helped his friends burn a cross. They had formed a kind of good guys' gang, "the Mallows," whose very name, from marshmallows, was a play on their own softness. In the fall of 1960, during their senior year, they nailed some scrap wood into a cross, adorned it with fireworks and set it ablaze on a hill beside the police station, with marshmallows scattered as a calling card

“Last year, Ukraine turned a corner of Russia into a battlefield. It is now a place of desolation and death,” says the NYT after going on an official guided tour of Kursk. Lots of civilians killed, we’re told, and who knows who did it, but Russia sure thinks it was Ukr, and who are we to doubt it?
The New York Times previously documented two instances of indiscriminate use of lethal force against Kursk civilians early in the incursion, actions that may amount to war crimes. But reporters were unable to establish who was responsible for those deaths.
One of Russia’s top law enforcement bodies, the Investigative Committee, has accused Ukrainian forces of torturing and killing a civilian in a residential building in Martynovka, and of killing two other residents of the village.
Russian officials and outlets blame Ukraine for other deaths, including in the village where Ms. Lobodova’s mother died. State media has published reports describing harsh treatment of civilians, rarely providing evidence.

Here’s Spencer Ackerman with by far the best take I’ve read on the racist moral panic targeting Zohran Mamdami. zeteo.com/p/my-fellow-...
To put it bluntly, when you have a "feeling" that a politician from a different race, ethnicity or religion threatens you, and you are unable to articulate how that threat is supposed to plausibly manifest, and you ignore the avalanche of evidence – his words, his record, his associations – that no such threat exists, that feeling you have is called racism.

As checks on the president go, the legislative and judicial branches are effectively finished. Only two actors will determine the fate of the coming power struggle: (1) Trump, and the brute force he commands, and (2) civil society, which decides his legitimacy. www.readthedetox.com/p/the-daily-...
Trump's authoritarianism will be only as repressive as civil society allows it to be—no more, no less.

Trump is similar to former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych. Both combine undeserved self-confidence with myopic impulsivity and reflexively meet any challenge with gratuitous brutality. Thus, when Yanukovych responded to popular demonstrations with unchecked violence in 2013-14, it backfired.🧵
When leaders break the rules with abandon, they lose their legitimacy. This opens the door for other political actors to remove them by any available means, legal or not.

Such brutish impulsivity is what sealed Yanukovych’s fate. After winning election in 2010, he packed the courts, ditched the constitution, and clamped down on the press. His disproportionate and violent attack on a Kyiv protest encampment in November 2013 turned what had been a limited series of demonstrations over his foreign policy into a nationwide revolt against his regime. By the time he fled to Russia in February 2014, a full 8.5 million Ukrainians, or 20 percent of the population, had taken part in the protests to oust him.

It’s starting. Trump is overreaching and trying to crush protests with force. It will backfire, making the protests bigger. He will fail. It won’t happen now, but this is the dynamic which could bring down his regime. From December: open.substack.com/pub/thedetox...
When faced with mass protests, Trump will undoubtedly respond with unchecked repression and brutal violence. This will only serve to undercut his legitimacy and mobilize opposition to his rule.

Re: Bezos's cave-in: The entire edifice of Trump's rule depends on other people showing even greater cowardice than he does--because Trump himself, it turns out, evinces quite a lot of it. This carries important implications for how his regime might come to an end. My latest: shorturl.at/jtP4T
Trump’s tendency to fire off the most demented, unhinged opening salvos only to reverse course at the slightest pushback carries important implications. We should not be fooled by the shock and awe he tries to instill and should instead see him for what he is—your typical schoolyard bully who cowers the moment somebody punches back. Unbelievable douche now having his own “oh shit” moment as the candidate he supported does exactly as promised. (Although in his defense, the choice between "wokeness" vs. the destruction of the global order and American democracy was super tough to make.)
Tweet from @BillAckman, part 1 of 2: The country is 100% behind the president on fixing a global system of tariffs that has disadvantaged the country. But, business is a confidence game and confidence depends on trust.

President @realDonaldTrump
has elevated the tariff issue to the most important geopolitical issue in the world, and he has gotten everyone’s attention. So far, so good.

And yes, other nations have taken advantage of the U.S. by protecting their home industries at the expense of millions of our jobs and economic growth in our country.

But, by placing massive and disproportionate tariffs on our friends and our enemies alike and thereby launching a global economic war against the whole world at once, we are in the process of destroying confidence in our country as a trading partner, as a place to do business, and as a market to invest capital.

The president has an opportunity to call a 90-day time out, negotiate and resolve unfair asymmetric tariff deals, and induce trillions of dollars of new investment in our country.

If, on the other hand, on April 9th we launch economic nuclear war on every country in the world, business investment will grind to a halt, consumers will close their wallets and pocket books, and we will severely damage our reputation with the rest of the world that will take years and potentially decades to rehabilitate.
Tweet from @BillAckman, part 2 of 2: What CEO and what board of directors will be comfortable making large,
long-term, economic commitments in our country in the middle of an economic nuclear war?

I don’t know of one who will do so.

When markets crash, new investment stops, consumers stop spending money, and businesses have no choice but to curtail investment and fire workers.

And it is not just the big companies that will suffer. Small and medium size businesses and entrepreneurs will experience much greater pain. Almost no business can pass through an overnight massive increase in costs to their customers. And that’s true even if they have no debt, and, unfortunately, there is a massive amount of leverage in the system.

Business is a confidence game. The president is losing the confidence of business leaders around the globe. The consequences for our country and the millions of our citizens who have supported the president — in particular low-income consumers who are already under a huge amount of economic stress — are going to be severely negative. This is not what we voted for.

The President has an opportunity on Monday to call a time out and have the time to execute on fixing an unfair tariff system.

Alternatively, we are heading for a self-induced, economic nuclear winter, and we should start hunkering down.

May cooler heads prevail.

With a number of Jewish organizations suddenly having an “oh shit” moment in the face of Trump’s naked repression, they must reckon with how they, and many others in the Jewish community, helped enable it. This is a good piece. certainthoughts.substack.com/p/we-did-thi...
Those who helped create this monster are uniquely positioned to dismantle it. Those who breathed life into these dangerous falsehoods must now speak truth with equal fervor. She added: “At all times, we are guided by our values, putting academic freedom, free expression, open inquiry, and respect for all at the fore of every decision we make.”

One of many examples underscoring how much of America’s system of rights and protections rests on the expectation that power-holders will refrain from abusing their authority. The thing about norms is that they fly out the window as soon as you get a president who doesn’t give a shit.
As of Tuesday, Khalil had not been charged with any crime. However, two people with knowledge of the matter told the New York Times that the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, was relying on a provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 that gives him broad power to expel foreigners if they give him “reasonable ground to believe” their presence in the US has “potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences”. Zeteo also reported that Rubio himself “personally signed off on the arrest”.

In February – after Columbia president Katrina Armstrong met with Israel’s education minister, where they discussed taking firmer action on campus speech – Columbia’s Barnard College expelled three students for political activism for the first time since the 1968 protests. This week – as the school welcomed former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who once said, “I’ve killed many Arabs in my life, and there’s no problem with that,” to campus – NYPD arrested nine students involved in a campus sit-in.

All the while, Columbia is maintaining a shadowy process to discipline students who are critical of Israel, including, apparently for writing op-eds.A Shift in Policy?

It is not yet clear if Columbia explicitly welcomed ICE and DHS onto its campus. But the school has recently issued guidance on “potential visits to campus” by ICE. While it encourages campus affiliates to contact the school’s public safety office if they see ICE activity on campus, it says faculty and staff “should not interfere,” for instance, in “exigent circumstances” where ICE agents seek access to university buildings or people without a warrant.

The ideology of the tech-douchebros running the U.S. govt is Leninist at its core: “Transformative change is inevitable, but we, the revolutionary vanguard, must speed it up.” This imperative—of speeding it up—justified Stalinism’s bloodiest excesses. The tech douchebros would do the same.
This deterministic framing also explains why so many libertarians found themselves drifting toward reactionary politics. If democracy is doomed, then why bother defending it? If technology is going to replace governance, then why not accelerate the process?

For instance, here’s a daily chart of Solana, one of the coins to be included in the “reserve.” You can see the green spike (about a 25% increase) the day of the announcement. The day after, it sold off heavily (red bar). Douchebros were already out by then.

This was over on Substack but, yeah, you might be onto something.
My initial comment: Trans rights—to free expression, citizenship, and basic dignity—are a bellwether for the rights of us all. What Jews were to the Nazis and “kulaks” were under Stalinism, trans people are under Trump. Once they start getting rounded up and put into camps, it won’t be long for the rest of us.

The reply: At least you offered to defend them to keep that from happening and to keep all minorities and peoples from falling… or did you come here to State a fact without it affecting you at fucking all???

Uh, no, it is not. In fact, it is entirely unaffected without that premise. Whether the opposition is forced underground (full authoritarianism) or elections, however rigged, still take place (competitive authoritarianism), ousting Trump will still require mass mobilization by civil society.

Your entire argument falls apart without that premise, and the facts already stand heavily against it.

Parker Molloy on the NYT editorial condemning Trump’s attacks on trans people—attacks enabled by the NYT’s own efforts to manufacture “debate” on the topic. shorturl.at/7vovK
The editorial board writes that what "shouldn't be debated is whether the government should target a group of Americans to be stripped of their freedom and dignity." But that's exactly what the Times has been doing: treating trans people's right to exist as a topic for debate rather than a fundamental human right.

He wanted to purify it by kicking the greedy Jews out that were destroying his country and turning them all into gays,” Mitchell said during the podcast.
