Happy 118th birthday, spacetime. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️ Hermann Minkowski addressed the 80th Assembly of German Natural Scientists and Physicians #OTD in 1908, offering a radical four-dimensional reformulation of Einstein's theory of special relativity. Here is how he opened his address.
"The views of space and time which I wish to lay before you have sprung from the soil of experimental physics, and therein lies their strength. They are radical. Henceforth space by itself, and time by itself, are doomed to fade away into mere shadows, and only a kind of union of the two will preserve an independent reality."

For your Tuesday, here's a shot of deep, deep, deep space from JWST. Every bright, six-pointed feature is a star in the Milky Way. Everything else—even the smallest, faintest dots—are whole galaxies millions to *billions* of lightyears away.
A spiral galaxy sits in the centre of the image; smaller galaxies dot the scene, some resolved only a small, colourful smudges. The six-pointed features are stars in the Milky Way.

The Moon at maximum (93%) eclipse. Only a small sliver at the top of the Moon is brightly lit. The rest of it is a rusty red, the so-called "blood Moon" effect.

My brother and nephew and I kayaked across the harbor to Burnt Island, where a very kind caretaker let us into the lighthouse even though it wasn't a day when they give tours.Me standing in front of one of the Guardians of the Seeds Trolls at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. The enormous trolls are sculpted out of wood. This particular troll is called Søren.
