After Florida issued a death warrant, several prosecution witnesses recanted their testimony against Mr. Bell. However, after being threatened with prosecution if they testified in support of Mr. Bell, they invoked the 5th Amendment at his state court evidentiary hearing. He lost in state court.

Is it laziness or incompetence? Three Florida "news" outlets reported that Ryan Cole was sentenced to death. None mentioned that the jury vote was non-unanimous and would not have resulted in a death sentence in the vast majority of US states, which require jury unanimity to impose death.

Cole was found guilty of stabbing Edman to death in 2019. The teen was trying to protect his 5-year-old sister after Cole broke into their Port Charlotte home.
