hot fire
And that is why today, I am resigning as party chair, effective immediately, and joining stalwarts like Carol and Denise Juneau, Steve Bullock, Nancy Keenan, Jon Tester, Max Baucus, Carol and Whitney Williams, and many others to endorse independent Seth Bodnar for the U.S. Senate.

I’m a person with a positive outlook. I’m uncomfortable being negative about anyone, especially a Democratic nominee. But sometimes it’s impossible to stay quiet; sometimes you have to make people uncomfortable for the greater good. The winner of this race will almost certainly vote on a nominee to the Supreme Court. And there are real questions about Democrat Alani Bankhead’s commitment to protecting a woman’s right to choose, her support of working people and her views of people living in poverty.

There's a line between "tactically gutsy" and "completely delusional" and the Republicans seem to have crossed it awhile back
So have Democratic outside groups pushed further on offense? Short answer: yes. You can tell by looking at whether their average dollar has gone to redder House races than it did in prior weeks.

In the week of August 2, the average Democratic outside spender’s dollar went to a D+3 district. By September 20, it had moved five points to an R+2.2 district. Also that week, 37% of Dem outside group digital spending was going to R+4 or higher seats, up from just 18% at the end of August.

Republican spending has remained remarkably steady, though. Their outside group share of spending in R+4 or higher seats has held steady between 34-39% since mid-August, while their average dollar has remained solidly in the R+2.0 and R+2.5 range.

Yes, you are reading this correctly: Zumiez, a popular skate and streetwear store found in shopping malls across the country, was among hundreds of groups ICE probed. The company has supported voter outreach efforts and contributed nearly $2 million to Democratic committees and groups in 2024.

Trump's Super PAC keeps spending big money going after moderate Dem incumbents in Trump-won seats (Suozzi in NY-03, Moskowitz in FL-25, MGP in WA-03) I think the strategy is 1) a hedge against an R comeback and 2) an assumption that other Dems who win in Trumpy seats are flotsam (gone in 2 years)

Donald Trump’s recent campaign-style advertisement — which states it was “paid for by the U.S. Government” — drew scrutiny from both parties this week over its legality and messaging. The administration reportedly paid at least $443,000 to air the “Love Me” spot across the country.

Osborn Leads Ricketts Despite Big Spending from GOP
With less than two months before Election Day, Nebraska voters1 give Independent Dan Osborn a 47 – 46 percent advantage in the race against incumbent Republican Senator Pete Ricketts. This race has stayed remarkably consistent over the past six months, despite millions of dollars spent in negative ads against Osborn. Ricketts is unable to open up an advantage and finds himself in a real fight to save his political career. The following are key findings from this survey:
•
Independent voters have abandoned Ricketts. Nebraska still has a Republican advantage, but that is undercut in this race by Osborn is aided by a massive 45-point advantage with Independents (67 – 22 percent). Osborn is even winning 11 percent of self-identified Republicans.
•
The environment is tough for Republicans. Despite cruising to victory in 2024 here, President Trump’s personal standing is underwater (44 – 49 percent favorable/unfavorable). Ricketts is in a similarly poor spot, with just 41 percent rating him favorably and 47 percent holding a negative opinion.

Results are taken from a survey of 800 likely voters in the November general election for U.S. Senate in Nebraska on behalf of Working Class Majority PAC. Interviews were conducted by live dialers via telephone and through text-to-web responses between September 3-8, 2026. Results carry a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence interval. The static nature of this race is clear from a range of other data as well. In February, an Osborn internal from Impact Research found Ricketts up one, 48-47. Over the next six months, Ricketts and allies outspent the Osborn side by more than $2 million in paid media. The GOP-side aired nearly 10,000 points more than their opponents on TV throughout the state, with an advantage of >3,000 in the Omaha and Lincoln DMAs. In August, an Osborn internal from Impact Research found the race tied, 47-47. Over the next month, the Ricketts side has had a spending advantage of more than $2.5 million, with a statewide TV advantage of more than 14,000 GRPs, including a 6,500 point lead in Omaha and Lincoln. In September, a poll from SurveyUSA had Osborn up four points, 46-42.
This race remains a toss-up. Osborn has weathered Ricketts’ avalanche of money and demonstrated that his independent brand is uniquely durable. But Ricketts’ spending shows no sign of abating, and we cannot afford to leave Ricketts unanswered as undecided voters begin to tune in this fall.

Ari Emanuel is apparently a Klingon because he eats gagh?!? www.nytimes.com/2026/09/20/b...
He’s on a quest to live forever.

Mr. Emanuel’s morning routine involves waking up at 4 a.m., stretching for 40 minutes and then doing breath work, sauna, meditation, an ice plunge and infrared light therapy before ingesting a protein shake and a cup of live worms to fight off “the bad bacteria in my gut.” He describes a recent lunch with his old CAA boss, Michael Ovitz. Mr. Emanuel writes: “He goes to the gym; he thinks that means he’s taking care of himself. But it doesn’t. I scold him. He hasn’t gotten his blood work done in years, he isn’t doing ice plunges, he isn’t doing daily breath work, he isn’t fasting. And he needs to be eating worms.”

Been thinking about this a lot since the Dalrymple piece on the East India Company (www.nytimes.com/2026/08/28/o...)
History shows that when a company starts acquiring the attributes of a state — the revenues, the courts, the treaties, the capacity to make war and peace — its transformation can damage the parent country at least as much as the territories it exploits. Its lobbying corrupts the legislature. It captures the treasury, because the corporation’s solvency becomes a public interest. It converts foreign policy into an extension of a balance sheet. And it shows that the threshold, once crossed, is astonishingly hard to recross. The window in which any of this can be undone closes fast.

States can master corporations. The taming of the mighty East India Company proves it, as does Beijing’s recent muscle flexing. Because of the power of the company’s corporate lobby, the British Parliament took 85 years, three parliamentary interventions, a famine, a bankruptcy and the bloodiest colonial uprising of the century to get it back under control, and by then, the damage in India was done.

The instruments still exist. What is lacking is the political nerve to use them.

whether or not the gas chambers or the killing fields or the mass graves existed or whether the writers Chomsky had chosen to champion were themselves operating in good faith is of secondary, if any, importance – what’s important is him never being at fault. Thus, when confronted with concrete evidence that he has either gotten an analysis horribly wrong or lent his imprimatur to those who did, Chomsky immediately shifts into defense lawyer mode with all the pedantic testiness of a right-libertarian drawing distinctions between hebephelia and ephebephilia. One favored strategy is to selectively quote fragments of his own statements like “The record of atrocities in Cambodia is substantial” or “the Russian invasion of Ukraine is a major war crime” as if they are his clearly stated primary positions, neglecting to mention that these appear as little more than throat-clearing concessions immediately preceding a main argument devoted to downplaying and denial.5 Similarly, Chomsky marshals an impressive level of deliberate obtuseness and feigned outrage to assert that he cannot possibly fathom how writing a laudatory foreword to a book could in any way imply endorsement of its contents or author, while insisting in the same breath that he has not read the work in question, that it cannot possibly contain anything abhorrent (but if it did it wouldn’t matter), and that he is in any case not qualified to evaluate its accuracy or integrity but is merely defending the freedom of speech by ensuring that unpopular or marginalized perspectives are heard (without addressing why he chose this particular perspective to defend). You will inevitably find him pivoting the discussion to the subject of American war crimes, indignantly lamenting that the controversy only proves his point about ideological repression, or maintaining that his judgment had been correct as certain facts had not been known at the time (even though he devoted great energy to undermining and resisting those fac…

Every Democrat who voted for the Laken Riley bill (which we should really call something else in honor of the innocent deceased) was told this would happen, and how it would be weaponized. But they were panicked by the election.
The ICE detainee population has also soared because the Trump administration has made it harder for judges to issue bonds that would allow immigrants fighting deportation to be released and continue working while they await their next court appearance. And the Laken Riley Act, signed by Trump nine days after taking office, has expanded the range of criminal charges that render someone ineligible for release, to include shoplifting and theft.

The RGA's seeing the same thing in #AZGov that everyone else is seeing in public polling (and they're probably counting on MAGA Inc. to bail out Trump's buddy, the same way SLF is counting on it for Paxton)
AZ-Gov

The Democratic Governors Association plans to devote $10 million to helping Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs win a second term, the group tells The Washington Post.

The Republican Governors Association has yet to announce any plans to aid Andy Biggs, the far-right congressman who easily won last week’s GOP primary but has trailed Hobbs in all available polling.

The RGA responded to the paper’s inquiries by saying it “will continue to hold Katie Hobbs accountable for her dismal record,” but it did not commit to devoting resources to the race.

The general election, though, may be a bit less expensive than anticipated no matter what the RGA ends up doing. Healthcare businessman Hugh Lytle, who loaned his campaign $2 million, lost the primary for the new No Labels Party to businesswoman Teri Ann Hourihan last week. Confusingly, though, Hourihan says on her website that she “rejected the No Labels Party endorsement.”

I'm late to this, but an absolute banger from @adamgurri.liberalcurrents.com here (full piece: www.liberalcurrents.com/editors-note...)
I am no utopian. I am keenly aware of the recurrent and global tendency for conflict to emerge among ethnic lines, and for immigration to be at the center of such conflicts. I have written about it at length.

But the answer to this cannot be withdrawal, retreat, or surrender, as so many seem to desire after a decade of the pro-immigration side taking a beating. The fact is that the pro-immigration side are, in fact, the realists. Freedom of movement is one of the most basic freedoms there is, more so than even freedom of expression. Its absence crushes down on us and leads to the sharp edges of the state being wielded against the innocent and the helpless. And a vibrant, dynamic, open society must include freedom of movement simply as a practical matter, if you do not want to live in at best a state of managed decline and stagnation.

Managed decline and stagnation are precisely what await every state that is "organized along ethnic lines" if they cannot find it within themselves to forge truly open societies that welcome very different people from very different places in large numbers. This talk of maintaining stability and relative homogeneity is nothing more than quitter talk, the realism of cowards.

The trade assets preserved in that heist, helped nudge them to a place where they believed they could withstand spending big on Kessler”

Source: https://marcstein.substack.com/p/another-burst-of-late-night-nba-intel

To establish a pathway so quickly after the marketplace opened to pry Kessler away from the Jazz required them to surrender two future first-round picks (fully unprotected in both 2031 and 2033) and two first-round pick swaps (2028 and 2030) in addition to signing Kessler to a new four-year, $130 million
contract.

Yet I'm told that the Lakers were emboldened to go to such lengths to acquire Kessler in large part because they acquired Luka Dončić from Dallas on such favorable terms in February 2025.

As hard to believe as it continues to be nearly 18 months since The Trade was consummated, Dončić was somehow pilfered from the Mavericks with just one unprotected first-round pick in 2029 leaving Lakerland. That solitary future first was packaged with Anthony Davis and Max Christie to land Luka ... with the Lakers also successfully keeping Austin Reaves out of the trade.

The trade assets preserved in that heist, in other words, helped nudge the Lakers to a place where they believed they could withstand spending so big on Kessler. They, too, had promised Dončić a top-flight center in the summer.
