Today, 23 Sept, is the centenary of the tragic suicide of Austrian Zoologist and Lamarckian, Paul Kammerer. A fascinating and controversial man. I wrote about him in this week's Nature. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Fraud sealed the fate of controversial zoologist Paul Kammerer — 100 years on, his ideas deserve revisiting
After an eventful life in the limelight, the discovery of a manipulated specimen preceded the biologist’s death. Questions about his findings remain.

We are recruiting 2 PhD students @ the University of Bologna to study neuron evolution in mosquitoes and non-bilaterian animals using single-cell genomics, evo-devo and computational biology. Plus, Bologna is hard to beat scientifically and gastronomically. More info: www.unibo.it/en/study/phd...

@rcply.bsky.social argues that phylogenetic inferences in sponge–ctenophore–bilaterian relationships based on shared chromosomal rearrangements suffer from insufficient statistical support. 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/molbev/msaf321 #evobio #molbio

Sponges, ctenophores, and the statistical significance of syntenies
Abstract. Shared fusions between ancestral chromosomal linkage groups have previously been used to support phylogenetic groupings, notably sponges with cni

Most papers are arcane studies in niche areas read by experts who ought to be able to understand them (and science managed without peer review before the 1960s). But they need to be able to trust the data, and ‘peer reviewers’ can’t tell them if it’s real.. 2/2

New preprint out! Evolutionarily conserved transcriptional regulators control monoaminergic neuron development. We uncover how ancient regulatory programs orchestrate the neurons that produce serotonin and dopamine across 550 million years of evolution. doi.org/10.1101/2025...

Evolutionarily conserved transcriptional regulators control monoaminergic neuron development
To what extent conserved developmental programs specify homologous cell types is a central question in biology. Here, we address this by focusing on reconstructing monoaminergic neuron development in ...
