Robert Gale @rcgale.bsky.social · 18/02/2024If you’re curious though, I naturally read it as though the parentheses were the main text, and that meaning was effortlessly clear. And then it took a bit of conscious work to unpack the primary statement, but it came with a little spritz of dopamine 120 0

Robert Gale @rcgale.bsky.social · 04/01/2024I don’t have any sway over other activists. The best I can do in terms of messaging is to have conversations with people, and hopefully along the way, I can persuade others that I’m a fairly reasonable person. That’s all I got on the responsibility of activists 000 0
Robert Gale @rcgale.bsky.social · 04/01/2024Um, sure? I’ve seen activists go after climate deniers with all kinds of hostility. Room for improvement on The Messaging, but I don’t feel any urgency to condemn them and express my wavering support. 100 0
Robert Gale @rcgale.bsky.social · 04/01/2024Glad to hear. Still, when someone tells me we should eliminate fossil fuels, my support doesn’t hinge on how well they can articulate the path to a carbon free future. 210 0
Robert Gale @rcgale.bsky.social · 04/01/2024You got me thinking about the climate change analogy. We have no idea how the fully reverse that, let alone how our lives will look once we hopefully do. The measures we’ve taken so far have barely made a dent in the problem. Meantime, it’s a struggle persuading people to take the problem seriously. 120 0
Robert Gale @rcgale.bsky.social · 04/01/2024I don’t think you’re wrong, but it’s an overly simple answer to an overly simple question. Violence is really tough. But if we moved all property violations into civil court immediately, I believe we would be vastly better off than we are now. I doubt my proposal would poll well though. 100 0
Robert Gale @rcgale.bsky.social · 04/01/2024I don’t have a good guess. Maybe half of Americans would be receptive to talking about the *problem*, so way less than that I suppose 120 0
Robert Gale @rcgale.bsky.social · 04/01/2024It’s very uncomfortable for most people to accept that the problem really is *that bad*. It took me many years of unlearning, and I have personal experience visiting loved ones in prison. If we’re not remotely on the same page about the problem, radical/difficult/uncertain proposals sound absurd 1/2 200 0
Robert Gale @rcgale.bsky.social · 04/01/2024Yeah, I agree, those questions are too important to be so dismissive about. At the same time, I don’t want to address those questions in most contexts either. 1/2 100 0
Robert Gale @rcgale.bsky.social · 04/01/2024If you believe 2, you’re still allowed to put support and effort into positive systemic change. I don’t want to put words in her mouth, but I think Hardesty’s success with Portland Street Response is inspiration in that regard. Yet despite its achievements, PSR is perpetually on the chopping block 120 0
Robert Gale @rcgale.bsky.social · 04/01/2024Regarding *significant systemic change,* I’m not super well read on the theory, but I think the abolitionist view is that the carceral state has so deeply permeated all of our systems such that meaningful change isn’t really feasible without severing the power/resources given to police & prisons 2/2 130 0
Robert Gale @rcgale.bsky.social · 04/01/2024I think serious abolitionists agree with this and prioritize this. I saw MK was catching some shit yesterday for posts etc, but if you look at her actual organizing work, she works tirelessly at building a better world. 1/2 110 0

Robert Gale @rcgale.bsky.social · 23/12/2023How much do fares discourage ridership, regardless of means? Robert Gale @rcgale.bsky.social · 18/12/2023Yeah, the BMI is the lazy bullshit that doctors just can’t quit! The only time in my adult life I was at a ”healthy“ weight was my last summer of college, when I was doing 40 hour weeks of physical labor and had no fat left to lose 120 0
Robert Gale @rcgale.bsky.social · 18/12/2023Absolutely, so difficult, and I won’t be the one to solve it! But my takeaway was that the focus on the BMI (our bullshit basis for defining obesity) is likely making the health crisis worse, and we would be wise to shift the focus on to sensible & sustainable healthy lifestyle choices instead 040 0
Robert Gale @rcgale.bsky.social · 18/12/2023At some point I read a very involved metastudy which persuaded me that rapid & repeated weight loss is far more dangerous for heart health than obesity, how doctors routinely instruct people to do so anyway, and how this confounds the obesity/health stats.
