It’s been a long time here in Iowa.

Flashbacks to junior year English class. Keeping the characters and timelines straight is not a trivial matter

No you’re right, it’s deeply weird even there. It was totally taboo to have tobacco ads anywhere supposedly even somewhat family-friendly for a long time. We remember the tobacco settlements. now they’re feeling emboldened by the political climate?

Wait, what? Is that on TV? Or just PPV or exclusive streaming?

Feeling limited and stressed because you’re unbearable? There’s hope. Moderate to severe pretension now has a treatment. Introducing Pretenxo, a once-weekly infusion shown in clinical studies to help over 60% of insufferable Bluesky account holders to chill out just a lil bit.

Interesting. I have never heard of such a thing. I wonder if you could safely hook that up to a range hood somehow? Or does that not flow enough cfm to get the smoke out. Much to consider

I have to say something here: I read his website/blog when I was 12, and thought it was deep. Then I grew up, and thought it was juvenile. Then he comes back in the 37th season of the show of my life, like he’s Vincent D’Onofrio as Det. Goren, coming back for a special episode of Law and Order.

When my dad started in software development in the 1980s, he was required to wear a suit and tie. It was business formal, all day every day. Amazing how things change.

I also think different lines of work have different standards. Law seems like it would be on the extremely formal end of a spectrum of norms, since it’s a tradition-bound profession where observing social norms is paramount. Like, “only navy or gray suit, no loud patterns, must wear watch.”

If I’m the interviewer, I wouldn’t be perturbed if an interviewee brought a beverage in a tasteful, professional drinking vessel. Even if they politely declined water. Hey, maybe it’s a comfort thing. Iced coffee in a disposable cup would be a mild negative, a Slurpee would be a major negative.

“Turbo” Richard Blair @rcblair.com · 26/09/2026
Just put it in a travel mug. Anyone whose opinion is worth listening to respects the stainless steel travel mug. But if it’s a Yeti, that’s a demerit, because it means you spent too much on a travel mug. And don’t bring a Slurpee, probably.

Frankly, celebrating unsafe driving habits gives me the ick. But what do I know?
060
“Turbo” Richard Blair @rcblair.com · 26/09/2026
I think many people are talking past each other when discussing this take. There’s far more nuance to job interview etiquette than can fit into a short post. As an interviewee, I wouldn’t bring a drink, because I’ll likely be offered a drink, and I should accept the drink to make a good impression.

Darnold (booty issue) has recovered. A relief for the Seahawks, though Drew Lock turned in a great performance last week, and confirmed his position as one of the best backups in the league. (I’m aware the Cardinals are not great.)

“Turbo” Richard Blair @rcblair.com · 25/09/2026
This is quite the odd take, in my most humble and sincere opinion. Now, if they’re literally shotgunning a white Monster while I’m asking a question or loudly sucking the last bit of a beverage from a straw, yeah, OK, that may count against you. But realistically, I’m offering them water or coffee.

This is exactly the idea I’ve contemplated to address some of the potential and real problems with the use and abuse of the pardon power
000
“Turbo” Richard Blair @rcblair.com · 25/09/2026
I can’t accept that the ultimate sovereign, the People, could not write a constitution vesting the pardon power in a different office, provided that the holder of that office is themselves accountable to the people.

Yeah, I think software is fundamentally different from a skyscraper or a bridge. Proving a system can’t produce an incorrect result is very difficult. (I forget if it’s provably impossible if certain things hold true…those classes were a long time ago.)

If the Dems actually win, we keep yelling at them to defend the vulnerable, because that’s what we’re supposed to be about. My own state has driven people out with their cruel anti-trans policies. We can and we must swing Iowa back, because “our liberties we prize and our rights we must maintain.”

I think we have to walk a mile in another man’s or another woman’s shoes. It’s asking a lot of people to ask them to vote for someone who equivocates on an issue so personal.

It’s nonsense. I say to them, “Don’t abandon vulnerable people and trade their rights like a pawn. Just say ‘I reject the premise.’”

I suppose a person could come up with some hypothetical scenario where conceding ground on sports would guarantee we could arrest the erosion of trans rights. That is not the situation. “Moderating” just shows weakness and demoralizes the base. Some Iowa candidates have done this and I hate it.

Getting fifth columnists out is pretty good for readiness.
United States WWII propaganda poster reading “Appreciate America: Stop the Fifth Column.” The fifth columnist pictured has “bigotry” on his hat and is trying to push down “justice.”
