My favorite strategy is to procrastinate and let them pile up a bit so I can speedrun 3 or 4 at once in different windows. That way you can save time even if any of the courses have a "you need to spend X minutes in this course before you're allowed to complete it" requirement.

I launched with 8400 (approaching 10k now). I've heard the conversion rate to usually be somewhere in the range 5%-20%, but I'm at 4.4% at the moment (my total sales are higher than that but I think most of them came from a sponsored aliensrock video, not wishlists)

tl;dr this launch has just been confusing rather than positive or negative for me lmao. I think I just need to keep reminding myself that the goal was to explore some new design space, not reach mass appeal. I think the higher wishlist count than expected just got my hopes up a bit.

But it's sitting at 100% positive reviews so far, people are seeing past the friction at the surface layer and appreciating the level design underneath, and the players who don't stick with it seem to appreciate it with a "not for me" attitude instead of hating on the game.

On the other hand - I'd set out to design a somewhat niche game that unapologetically leaned into the unique and interesting aspects of its systems, whether this led to "fun" or not. As a result, I expected more players to get frustrated or confused and leave negative reviews.

Hard to say why this is. Maybe $15 is too high for how the game looks. Maybe people watched gameplay and are too intimidated to try it. Maybe the opposite, and people just think it's another Monument Valley. Maybe the median play time is too low and made the Steam algo lose confidence in the game.

I followed the common indie advice of doing steam events, getting wishlists, getting onto "popular upcoming", etc. I ended up hitting >8x my original wishlist goal by launch time. But when it came down to it, the conversion rate just ended up being low.

As far as I understand, it's just wishlists - the advice that goes around is you need around 7-10k to show up on the list. There seems to be some sort of bucketing based on release date as well (i.e. all April 2 "popular upcoming" games showed up on the list before the April 3 ones).
