Ryan Barrett @rbarrettpei.bsky.social · 03/05/2026This will happen 5000 times in Canada without supply management. Supply management enables Canadians to pay the same for milk (when you factor in tax payer $ paid to farmers in the USA) with moderate herd sizes, more family farms, fewer environment issues, better animal welfare. 010

Ryan Barrett @rbarrettpei.bsky.social · 28/10/2025To my mind... it doesn't matter how much of a nutrient bank a field has if there a lack of water to bring it into the plant. If you have access to irrigation and good soil structure, you can definitely grow crops with low OM...but that is very region specific. PNW has gift of near limitless H20 030
Ryan Barrett @rbarrettpei.bsky.social · 28/10/2025I would struggle to find a farmer that would label a low OM sandy field as "fertile" unless they had irrigation. That very much hit home here this year, where much of PEI got less than 4 in of rain from July 1 to mid Sept. 220
Ryan Barrett @rbarrettpei.bsky.social · 28/10/2025I agree in part... but the large majority of acres can't be irrigated today. So having resilient soils that can feed plants during periods of drought has value in most farming areas. 100
