Soccer isn't really a thing in a lot of ex-British colonies. Maybe something to do with the upper class administrators taking their boarding school sports of cricket and rugby. Those 2 (or sports descended from rugby e.g. AFL) are still dominant in India/Australia/NZ, and South Africa to some extent

Doubly funny error given that the last time the Tories had been "in opposition" was 2010.

I made the switch on my home machine (mainly gaming and web browsing, occasional light admin) about 6 months ago and it's been great. Much better experience than when I tried 10+ years ago. Plus there's much more incentive to get away from Windows now. Hope it's all smooth for you!

I really liked that book too. I went to Canada a couple of years ago and really felt a sense of loss imagining what North American peoples would have been like if not destroyed by disease. How different the settlement might have looked!

The stupid thing is, there probably is some sort of repayment rate vs income vs pension/investment growth sweet point where it does actually make sense to pay it off early - but trying to calculate what this would be would probably suffice for a master's thesis in economics. Utterly deranged system.

I can recommend @aptshadow.bsky.social's Tyrant Philosophers series. I've been racing through them and thoroughly enjoying myself, and they're somewhat discworldy (although serious rather than satirical).

You could also write wrapper functions for the DBI functions which open and close the connection, along the lines of this. read_duckdb <- function(q) { con <-dbConnect(...) on.exit(dbDisconnect(con)) dbGetQuery(q) }

Left is a table, right is a figure. Left has headers, information is primarily text/numeric. Right's information is primarily visual - I view it as 2 faceted plots with the headers as titles and the text as captions.

I like {showtext}. Here's the section from my person cheatsheet (code in alt text).
library(showtext)

showtext_auto() # this is required to force the ggplot renderer to use the fonts
font_add_google("Urbanist", "sans-serif")
font_add_google("Courier Prime", "monospace")
font_add_google("Indie Flower", "handwriting")

library(ggplot2)
ggplot(mtcars, aes(x = factor(cyl))) +
    geom_bar() +
    labs(
        title = "Urbanist sans serif",
        subtitle = "Courier Prime monospace",
        caption = "Indie flower handwriting"
    ) +
    theme(
        plot.title = element_text(family = "sans-serif"),
        plot.subtitle = element_text(family = "monospace"),
        plot.caption = element_text(family = "handwriting"),
        axis.title = element_blank(),
        axis.text = element_blank(),
        text = element_text(size = 40)
    )

Figured out a nicer way of doing it, using the existing clip = "off" in coord_cartesian() and multiple new lines before the title, you can use the defaults labs() for title and subtitle without resorting to annotation or label layers. gist.github.com/simply-rayte...

I found the focus on safeguarding in the police station in the first episode oddly touching, and quite true to life. It made me feel a little proud in a strange way - the way a society treats young people is quite revealing of its values.

The Master and Commander series (Aubrey/Maturin) by Patrick O'Brian narrated by Ric Jerrom are excellent listens. It's historical fiction set in the age of sail with all the nautical jargon. Doesn't really fit your genres but it strikes a fantasy/history note for me; it's such a different world.

Also, their beliefs aren't "traditional", they were invented in like the 80s. But it's a useful fiction for them to pretend they're the real Americans or whatever.
