Bob Dylan has played "Ballad of a Thin Man" 1,361 times live. Over all that time, the song has had a number of different arrangements—from sax solos to spooky echoes to a one-off Swing Revival version. I broke them all down:

Related to them having fun with their one-hit wonder status, their last album includes "Torturing James Hetfield," ripping on him for saying he was happy Metallica was played at Gitmo. They threaten to play him Chumbawamba's Greatest Hits, then a voice in the background croons "There's only one…"

Dylan tour kicks off in a couple weeks. Here's a list of songs he last performed in 2019. Which feels like a nice sweet spot for possible surprises—exciting, but still entirely plausible.* (* Will The Circle excepted, that was a one-off with Neil Young)

Kicking off a new series on cities where Bob Dylan has only performed once ever. First up: Las Cruces, NM. Dylan performed Marty Robbins' "El Paso" for the only time ever—and he did it twice in the same show!

Just remembered when Miley Cyrus and The Roots covered Freewheelin' outtake "Baby I'm in the Mood for You" on Jimmy Fallon. That might top even Chalamet's SNL set for Most Unlikely Bob Dylan Cover Performed on Late Night TV.

Nice try but it's not truly deluxe unless it's 39 discs long and includes 19 different versions of "Vincent Van Gogh"

Amazingly, in 30-plus years of the Never Ending Tour, there seems to be only ONE time where Bob Dylan played an all-60s setlist. I investigated that show, 37 years ago today.

The September episode dropped today! In it, my guest, Graley Herren, discusses his new book, Bob Dylan in Cincinnati, in which he argues “where and when a performance takes place matters.” Buy the book with the link in the show notes. Enjoy! open.substack.com/pub/infinity...
