Raymond Liehm @rayliehm.bsky.social · 10/02/2026Just because there's no apparent afterlife or *cosmic* purpose, doesn't mean that nothing you do matters. What we do matters to us, and to each other, while we're all still here. After all, if there is no god, then all we have is each other. In short, atheism is not nihilism. 210

Raymond Liehm @rayliehm.bsky.social · 08/02/2026I'm tired of adulting. Every decision I make seems to be the wrong one. 020
Raymond Liehm @rayliehm.bsky.social · 06/02/2026It's saying "I don't accept the claim that god(s) exists". Which is weaker than, and not equivalent to, asserting/claiming that a god does not exist. It is even compatible with forms of agnosticism. For example, although I suspect there is no god, I know I can never prove it with certainty. 100
Raymond Liehm @rayliehm.bsky.social · 06/02/2026Many atheists don't define themselves that way, so you need to be careful with your terminology. My atheism is simply "I don't believe in a god", and that position requires no faith. 100
Raymond Liehm @rayliehm.bsky.social · 31/01/2026But at this point we're starting to go around in circles. You've given me something to think about, and I hope I've done the same for you. I appreciate the civil discussion, as it's a rare thing to come across when talking on this subject. 010
Raymond Liehm @rayliehm.bsky.social · 31/01/2026- people kill "in the name of atheism", when those who apparently do exactly that are instead acting on behalf of anti-theism, which isn't an equivalent statement. They're not killing because they don't believe in god, but because they also believe that no one else should. 100
Raymond Liehm @rayliehm.bsky.social · 31/01/2026But you said yourself that anti-theists often don't use the term and outright. And if the National Socialists or DPRK are any example, names aren't always accurate in their literal description. My point is just that despite your argument, I still don't think it's fair to say that - 100
Raymond Liehm @rayliehm.bsky.social · 31/01/2026For example, motorcycle gangs are a subcategory of people who ride motorcycles, but we don't ascribe the crimes of those gangs to all motorcyclists, because the motorcycles weren't the driving factor. It's what the gangs bolted on to that identity. 000
Raymond Liehm @rayliehm.bsky.social · 31/01/2026Agreed, but I think I said as much in my initial reply. Just because it is a sub-category, it doesn't mean that atheism deserves the credit for those deaths when it was something else that was bolted onto it (anti-theism) which was the main driver. 200
Raymond Liehm @rayliehm.bsky.social · 31/01/2026I think that's true too, but I'm still struggling here. Can you think of, or do you have any examples of, an instance where an atheist who is not an anti-theist would kill in the name of their atheism? 100
Raymond Liehm @rayliehm.bsky.social · 31/01/2026However, it's very easy to take actions when you think others should do something, which is what anti-theism does (e.g. "I don't believe in a god, and neither should you."). But YMMV. A lot of this comes down to systems of definitions, which people always disagree over. 010
Raymond Liehm @rayliehm.bsky.social · 31/01/2026I agree that there's a lot of unspoken overlap, which is where a lot of the confusion comes from. For me, atheism has always been "I don't believe in a god". It's just a singular position, and there's no strong worldview which flows from it. It's hard to kill in the name of not believing something. 210
Raymond Liehm @rayliehm.bsky.social · 31/01/2026Maybe I'm splitting hairs, but I would argue that the deaths you're talking were committed in the name of anti-theism, rather than atheism. True, one generally has to be the latter to be the former, but at least anti-theism constitutes a proper worldview. 110
