Reposted by RayBenefieldRayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 29/11/2024One of the hardest things about being a solo dev is finding large enough pools of assets with a cohesive style to make games. This pack is intended for comprehensive collections of #gamedev assets with enough quantity & quality to make many games. Help me find more 🥺🥺🥺 go.bsky.app/3UgrDw9 1624555 245
RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 14/12/2024ℹ️ℹ️ℹ️ The biggest design mistake early #gamedev makes... Designers are often proud of what they made, and the easiest trap to fall into is "I don't want a player to miss this". Early player journey is often flooded w/ noise, only show the best parts early on. Breadcrumb the rest solo devs. 0160 16
RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 12/12/2024Ooo, ooo, ooo!!! Good time to remind people that I started this Starter Pack for asset collections and creators to help solo devs solve this asset problem. 💖💖💖 go.bsky.app/3UgrDw9 I've been trying to find more and reach out to them to join the Blue Sky #gamedev community 😅😅😅 1174 17
RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 12/12/2024Halo Forge is what tipped me over the edge and made me realize I really wanted to be a designer, not just a coder in games. Took me MANY years, but I was finally so good I couldn't be ignored and Fortnite Creative was the tipping point where Epic Games reached out and asked me to be a designer 🥰🥰🥰 110 1

RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 12/12/2024Haha lessons learned for the future of course. Off to go explore!!! Lol 💖💖💖 010 1
RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 12/12/2024I don't know about the rest of #gamedev... but I LOVE kitbash WIP stuff as a level designer who started in UGC like Halo Forge, we only had premade assets. The process can be more exciting as it is inspiring to remember that everyone has a process too. Helpful for the solo devs out there 💖💖💖 370 7

RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 09/12/2024Yeah I just saw that. Really neat feature for platforms that ghost content for creators. Other platforms should allow subdomain based usernames. Would actually be really nice. 😊😊😊 000 0

RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 09/12/2024My solo dev journey has taken me down the route of UI. I've made both a hotbar and a radial menu for my farming game. I'm going to pretend it is still #ScreenshotSaturday for #gamedev visibility purposes lol But I'm learning a lot about Unreal Engine's UMG for UI. 😅😅😅 0263 26
RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 05/12/2024Oh I missed #WIPWednesday for my #gamedev lol... was on 24 hours of no sleep lol. My solo dev journey has taken me into the realm of UI. It's not great... but it's something. I'm grateful for assets from @selieltheshaper.bsky.social and @synty.bsky.social for saving me so much time. 💖💖💖 0192 19

RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 30/11/2024Absolutely 100% agreed. Finish the thing, later you can upgrade the thing. Quality over quantity is a trap in this field. Quantity creates quality of you care about your craft. So do the thing first, then make it pretty and custom 😉😉😉 010 1

RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 30/11/2024The small steps are so important. I've been trying to make a better habit of using Notion to track design stuff so I have documents that are "artifacts" and sorta milestones of proof of progress to move forward. SUPER valuable. RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 30/11/2024🎉🎉🎉 Go get it #gamedev! Huge asset collections allow you to finish your games sooner than later. Things like UI button prompts can save you SO much time. Use it! ❗❗❗ @kenney.bsky.social is in the asset collections starter pack I made a few days ago as a resource for solo dev. go.bsky.app/3UgrDw9 091 9
RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 30/11/2024Absolutely keep doing the thing. When you finish you have something that you can port to anything if you think it is worth it. Having something tangible to show people too if you want to grow a team is so much more valuable than "just an idea". Sending all the good vibes 💖💖💖 110 1
RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 30/11/2024✨✨✨ No matter what platform gets you into #gamedev, you should not be ashamed. Twine, RPG Maker, RPG in a Box, Halo Forge, Fortnite Creative, UEFN, Roblox, Scratch, Game Maker, etc. Being a solo dev is hard. Your ideas can always be remade in more powerful engines. Just finish it 💖💖💖 5497 49
RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 30/11/2024This includes not being afraid to use asset packs as a solo dev. A game is more than your assets. And you can always upgrade your assets later. 💖💖💖 Don't let bullies in #gamedev gatekeep you from finishing YOUR game. Do what you gotta do. 😎😎😎 1131 13
RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 29/11/2024100% agreed... No reason to be that picky and gatekeep something. 😉😉😉 010 1

RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 29/11/2024Yeah I can definitely see where you are coming from. Ultimately it comes down to a negotiation at that stage too. As long as we are up front with our intentions and goals with who wr commission so they have the agency to back out if it doesn't work for them. That solves the ambiguity of it all 😊😊😊 100 1
RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 29/11/2024It's made to solve a very specific problem. "As a dev I need the flexibility of a variety of assets to mix and match to make multiple games and have the flexibility of creative expression vs others with the same assets." Your assets don't fully solve that specific problem yet. I hope they do soon 100 1
RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 29/11/2024Commissioning I think is definitely where the tough line is. Cuz if it's made specifically for your game and they have to adjust to specs you give specifically, then it becomes a collaboration because what they make is their expression of your idea. So there's two variables to the formula now. 🤔🤔🤔 100 1
RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 29/11/2024Exactly, like the same goes for most things in this world. In those terms, you don't build your own PC or build your own car or cook your own meal 😂😂😂 We evolve through using abstractions created by others so we can build new abstractions for others to use. 😉😉😉 110 1
RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 29/11/2024For sure... there's a lot of marketing required and marketing is really a game of trust. Artists who are consistent and build up a library of "proof" will eventually get out there. 😊😊😊 It's the same with us devs. We just have less output cuz making one game is a LOT of investment. 😅😅😅 020 2
RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 29/11/2024Not at all, I get life is a thing (I'm a parent). When you have multiple at packs that span themes/genres, let me know. 💖💖💖 This pack is a resource for devs, not exposure for artists. If I added everyone with a single asset pack it'd be hard to find those that are flexible for multiple games. 100 1
RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 29/11/2024You have one pack available that was initially released 3 years ago, updated recently sure. But it's also very specific and not a collection of art packs. Just one. Quantity and consistency in releases matters for reliability for devs. So when you have that, then please do reach out again. 💖💖💖 100 1
RayBenefield @raybenefield.bsky.social · 29/11/2024Yes you should give people credit in #gamedev. But if you are using assets that someone has placed on a store, you can absolutely still call yourself a solo dev. They didn't make assets for YOUR game, they made a resource for others. And solo dev is an individual leveraging existing resources. 5183 18
