Ravvi @ravvi.bsky.social · 08/10/2026By making the focus about a scary monster, you can slip just a little of the true horror underneath without inducing the unpleasant discomfort of making your story JUST about that thing. 000
Ravvi @ravvi.bsky.social · 08/10/20263) Have at least a few of the horror elements be some wild-ass shit. There are things that people have actually experienced, and then there are things that no one has, or ever will experience. This is very common, i.e. Alien, the Thing, Nightmare on Elm Street, It. 100
Ravvi @ravvi.bsky.social · 08/10/2026It feels less likely that men could be victimized and rendered vulnerable, so the mind can find that less alarming than if it were happening to someone who was. Bonus points here because men absolutely are victims of violence and that’s a really big problem. 100
Ravvi @ravvi.bsky.social · 08/10/20262) Have it happen to a white, cis man. Men are immune to most societal dangers that women and effeminate men face. (This isn’t actually true, of course, but their privilege does somewhat insulate them from these dangers.) The Scum Villain danmei and others are examples of this. 100
Ravvi @ravvi.bsky.social · 08/10/20261) Make it a fantasy setting. If it’s not happening in a recognizable world, then that border between ‘thrill’ and ‘legit traumatic danger’ becomes a much wider boundary. The Orville had a fantastic example of this when Topa was kidnapped in season 2. 100
Ravvi @ravvi.bsky.social · 08/10/2026So the trick is to create distance to soften and widen that space into a comfy little spot where you can spend some quality time. How does one create distance to reach giggly good times instead of unhappy trauma? There are many ways but here are some of my personal favourites. 100
Ravvi @ravvi.bsky.social · 08/10/2026And for most people? It can be kinda fun when your brain rejects a thing. You get all adrenalized and alert and giggly, especially when you’re juuuuust teasing that a harmful thing might happen without going all the way into unhappy, traumatic panic mode. 100
Ravvi @ravvi.bsky.social · 08/10/2026The mind naturally rejects content that it has been conditioned to find harmful, and it does so more strongly when that perceived harm is greater. 100
Ravvi @ravvi.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Saw a post about writing horror fic that reminded me that I actually write a lot of horror and have thoughts. Good horror isn’t going to be the most intense, or even the most immersive writing because by its nature, horror is challenging. 100
Ravvi @ravvi.bsky.social · 14/09/2026If it helps, I’ve always loved your art style. It‘s so roumnd~ So pretty ^_^ 010

Ravvi @ravvi.bsky.social · 26/06/2026You can’t make a building that’s worse than where I work. There’s 2/3 fewer bathrooms for women than for men and until recently those were used to store janatorial supplies 🫠 110

Ravvi @ravvi.bsky.social · 21/06/2026They can still book it when pressed though. I will never forget how fast a 13” long centipede whipped around after being grabbed by a pair of tongs with the most unnatural dry squeak I’ve ever heard in my life. Tarantulas also can dart if needed to capture prey or escape predation. I’m not sure… 240
