Emails show how far CCPSA went to accommodate then-police superintendent Larry Snelling to appear and discuss CPD/ICE interactions. “We met ahead of time with him and basically gave him a script of the evening so that he could prepare and not be caught off guard,” wrote Commissioner Gina Piemonte.

Subject: Re: IMPORTANT: PLEASE REVIEW IMMEDIATELY RE EMAIL FROM CPD ABOUT NEXT WEEK’S SPECIAL MEETING

I opt for the last option:

Say that the Commission will determine who to invite to its meetings and how to structure them, that the Commission intends to proceed with subject mater experts on the agenda on a separate panel, and hopes that the Superintendent will attend.

Here are my thoughts: We have already accommodated him way too much. We had to bifurcate the hearing on 2/26 because he couldn’t be present. We are conducting a public hearing on April 2, Passover, because that’s the only date he was available. Then we met ahead of time with him and basically gave him a script of the evening so that he could prepare and not be caught off
guard. Very generous on our part. Then he refused to be part of a panel discussion so we changed the format for him. Now he’s refusing to even appear at a meeting where subject matter experts will also be presenting. In addition, he is deliberately misstating the purpose of the meeting so that he can control the narrative. Under these conditions I don’t know why we are bothering to have him at all. It will only serve to further enrage the community who is asking for accountability and transparency. Perfectly reasonable requests. I don’t know whether we can force him to participate. I don’t see the point of proceeding on his terms.

NEW: Meltdowns, threats & FOP influence have marred the fight for civilian police accountability in Chicago. Some police district councilors question the future of the body they serve on as they battle CPD interests to get things done. The fault lines run deep. From @zoetakaki.bsky.social:

Civilian oversight blues: inside Chicago’s ongoing police accountability meltdown

Chicago has a new community police oversight body that emerged in response to the historic 2020 protests. According to those elected to serve, however, it’s already full of cops.

Then this past June ICE struck an occupied vehicle in Chicago's Albany Park neighborhood while trying to arrest another man. This incident also involved a balding agent who's been involved with multiple aggressive ICE actions shoving an onlooker and pointing his taser at the gathering crowd.

Video of the ICE arrest on Garfield & Hermitage today depict a nearby vehicle with rear driver-side damage. It's unclear if that damage occurred during the arrest or if it's coincidental. Either way, ICE & CBP have a pattern of crashing into cars during operations across Chicagoland. Examples:

Tonight, a group of local Franklin Park women who have tended to a memorial for Silverio Villegas Gonzáles will be present at the village’s board meeting to ask it be “formally recognized as a permanent community space for remembrance, collective healing, and immigrant safety.”

Statement from Hijas Del Pueblo:
"On September 12, 2025, Silverio Villegas González was unjustly killed, but he was also reborn into our lives."
Since Silverio's death, Hijas del Pueblo, a group of women and neighbors from Franklin Park and surrounding communities, has worked to ensure his memory is not forgotten. We have continuously tended to his vigil, planted and cared for flowers, and transformed a place of tragedy into a space of beauty, remembrance, and collective healing.
Silverio's death also sparked new life within our community. Neighbors came together, new relationships were formed, and groups emerged dedicated to caring for one another while working to ensure that this kind of violence and injustice does not happen again.
On August 17, we will stand before the Franklin Park Village Board of Trustees to ask that Silverio's vigil be formally recognized as a permanent community space for remembrance, collective healing, and immigrant safety.
In a town shaped by generations of immigrant families, this space represents more than one tragedy. It represents our commitment to remembering, caring for, and protecting one another.
We invite our neighbors to stand with us and join Hijas del Pueblo as we continue tending Silverio's flowers, honoring his memory, and building safer spaces for our community.
With much love and care for our community, Hijas del Pueblo

Sometimes, in the interest of driving ourselves insane, we sit and run the numbers. The amount of $ required to fully fund our operation the way we'd really want to (like paying full time reporters a living wage, with real health insurance) is unfathomable. We can't promise we'll ever get there.
