It remains baffling to me that we have a clear constitutional requirement that the president can't enrich himself on the job, something we had no problem enforcing strictly for hundreds of years, and then this sweaty conman came by and the nation just sorta shrugged it off.

You can read the introduction to the first edition of his book here: josephdharris57.wordpress.com/wp-content/u... Something funny happened to me: I read Harris' book on the couch (I woke up late because I went to bed super late), and my first instinct was to sit at my desk and start taking notes.

Also, as someone who uses and teaches qualitative methods, Harris' approach to doing things with texts completely resonates with my own way of using text that I have analyzed (particularly quotations and extracts from my fieldnotes) to support my written analysis So, I stand corrected: GREAT BOOK.

In RE-READING Harris' book "Rewriting", I realize that the core of what he is teaching in the book COMPLETELY resonates with what I teach my students (and people on my blog), and with Graf & Birkenstein's "They Say/I Say": your work is in dialogue with other's work, so you DO THINGS WITH TEXTS.

- My 10 pages of a printed, physical book were from Harris’ “Rewriting: How to Do Things with Texts”. I’ll confess the first time I read it I didn’t like it. It felt like it was doing something different to what I wanted to learn to do (revising my own texts). Well, color me ashamed…

Day 8 of #RPVHabits wherein I follow my own advice - 10 minutes of quiet, in the dark time for myself can’t be done in Mexico City, I’ve realized. Or at least the part of Mexico City where I am. So it had to be just 10 minutes of simply sitting still and reflecting as much as possible.

If you are curious about how I arrived to this unofficial "writing/research design/research methods & techniques guru" situation, I basically did what Tulley did in her book: I asked my former professors at UBC (and other universities): "what are your writing strategies? TEACH ME EVERYTHING".

I am well aware that this is extraordinarily self-indulgent, but in re-reading one of my published book chapters on comparative methods for the study of waste, I DO love my writing. www.taylorfrancis.com/chapters/edi...
Comparison is at the core of any scholarly enterprise, regardless of the number of cases. Even
if we do not think we really are comparing, we always look for difference, even within a single
unit of analysis. Intellectually, we are humans wired to contrast and detect variations across
systems and establish patterns that help us explain how variation occurs. Comparing across
different units of analysis is also an exercise in systematization and organization of information
that can provide a foundation for structured learning about different production models, organizational
systems, institutional arrangements, countries, regions, and cities. Comparative
methods have increasingly gained popularity in policy analysis (Peters and Fontaine 2020),
public administration (Jreisat 2005), public policy (Engeli and Rothmayr Allison 2014), but
they have been a staple of the main field of political science (Collier 1993). This chapter engages
mostly with comparative politics/policy/public administration because those are the main
areas/disciplines that I was trained in and that my research and teaching contribute to, but the
various fields and disciplines in which I publish (history, geography, methods) are also closely
related. Nevertheless, I also draw examples and ideas from the fields of anthropology, sociology,
and even literature.
I want to note that there is no single “comparative method”. When I indicate comparative
method(s) and whether I use plural or singular is a deliberate choice that signals the broad range
of words that attempts to express how different types of comparisons can be undertaken across
case studies, variables, and methods. One can contrast press releases and analyze text production
across different organizations to discern how anti-waste-facility non-governmental organizations
frame their messaging to achieve specific objectives. We can also compare different
treatment processes and the decision-making processes of engineers in charge of waste managem…

But I am also reminded of what Julia Cameron said: "The trick of finding writing time is to make writing time in the life you've already got. That's where you've got leverage. Stop imagining some other life as a "real" writer's life". This is the life I have, and I have to make it work. I can.

It reminded me that I KNOW how to get a book written and completed and submitted and published. I just need the time, clarity of mind and space to get it done. And it's not easy. I remember getting annoyed at Helen Sword and Joli Jensen for suggesting we carve time out of our busy schedules.

The chapter I chose was Chapter 3 (and yes, I read more than 10 pages, I finished the entire thing). Obviously, I'll admit: every book I post on these threads is a book I've already read, so I'm not actually "reading" but instead, "re-reading". I am so behind in my writing commitments!
