This guy is hanging around in the garden . Taking a break from pecking wood to nibble on a fat ball. Can't say I blame him.

My first bottle of rose hip syrup! It's delicious as you'd expect. This is my third foraged syrup of the autumn- I've already done damson syrup and crabapple syrup. All a bit foraging bonkers this year.

Kitten Dave has extended his oesophagus and covered it in feet so it acts as a huge, horrific flesh centipede. Imagine it hard.

@thatnatt.bsky.social and I are working with Ralph Steadman and have a lovely treatment for an adaptation of his visceral, violent, brutal take on Animal Farm- which amounts to "tell this exact story, bringing these drawings to life" but no point talking to people about it at the mo

This beauty is Blue For You - there are no really blue roses, just like there are no really blue chickens but you still get ones with "blue" in the name. I don't mind, I LOVE these purple flowers and she smells fantastic too. Just coming into bloom properly now.

020

Joel Veitch @rathergood.bsky.social · 17/05/2025

The roses are really starting to get going now! This is westerland which is a gorgeous climber I have along a wall at the front. She has a fabulous and quite unusual colour which really lifts my heart and I'm ever so glad to see her return. She also smells lovely!

090

Joel Veitch @rathergood.bsky.social · 16/05/2025

Madame Alfred Carriere is blooming. Now that is a proper name for a rose! She is a rampant climber and is thriving on my north-facing wall, where a lesser plant would struggle. I saw the huge one Vita Sackville-West planted a Sissinghurst on a north wall and copied her. She is thornless and lovely!

Joel Veitch @rathergood.bsky.social · 15/05/2025

I'm a sucker for these love-heart petunias. I've got a load of them in pots out the front. They come in a variety of colours and I love them all, though to be fair I love all petunias without exception.

I love a bearded iris, although I do not have that many growing in my garden. I love this one with its deep rich colours and velvety petals. I would like to have more but this bed which is very well drained and very sunny is about the only place they are happy in my garden. Most of it is quite wild.

140

Joel Veitch @rathergood.bsky.social · 13/05/2025

This is the first bloom of the season on Scentimental - an appalling name for a gorgeous rose. As you would expect it smells delightful, and I adore the petals splatted with red as if they had been painted. I do think, though, that flowers and fruits should have romantic names.

This is clematis Polish Spirit, which is slowly working its way through the large climbing rose on the front of the house. It's a great flower.

A lot of people think of cow parsley as a weed but it is really lovely this time of year and the wildlife loves it, so I say let it do its thing and cut it back when it's gone over. Lovely!

091

Joel Veitch @rathergood.bsky.social · 10/05/2025

This gazania is in a pot at the front of the house, which is south facing and sheltered. It was supposed to be tender and entertain us for just one summer but it has been here 7 years now and keeps on blasting sunshine enthusiasm at us every day.

918514

Joel Veitch @rathergood.bsky.social · 09/05/2025

First rose is out at the front of the house. Soon roses will be everywhere! There are hundreds and hundreds of buds swelling on the roses all around the garden. Hooray!

The Pheasant's Eye is the last daffodil in my garden. It's a very old variety with a lovely aroma. The first daff (a Tamara) bloomed for Christmas and these venerable ladies are still going strong, so we always have daffs right up until the roses take over, any time around now.

0110

Joel Veitch @rathergood.bsky.social · 07/05/2025

Lilac! This is the first year my lilac has really flowered properly. It smells absolutely divine. It is a brief moment of glory but SO worth it.

The little chicks are enjoying their days in the big run being big girls. We're putting them out in the morning and bringing them back in in the evening. Soon we'll leave them out overnight. Little chickeny childrens!

The camassias bloom as the daffs are fading away. I adore their bursts of blue, but they are the last bulbs in the grass and I am always sorry to see them signal the end of this wonderful time of the year.

The big crabapple is fully in flower now. The only thing nicer than chilling in the hammock under the blossoms is chilling in the hammock when they are falling like pink snowflakes, which will be soon and is brief but magical.
