People try to frame using the Japanese name as a "dirty weebs" thing when like 99% of the time in 2026 it's entirely dependent on if a thing got big with fan TLs or if it got a simultaneous English release, and if the translated name is easier to say or not.

I'm going to say "Watamote" instead of "No Matter How I Look at It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular!" because it sounds better and that's how I read it first. If someone isn't familiar with it then it doesn't matter either way because if they're interested they'll be googling the name anyway

It's case by case and honestly I'm not really too concerned given we live in an era where anyone can look up anything at any time. It's also just a different cultural context. Fan TLs are the backbone of a lot of western otaku culture, some people only really interact with it that way.

Sometimes it just sounds better or shortens easier in Japanese. Sometimes I just get used to the JP name before something has an official release. In 99.9% of cases it's not conscious stubbornness, it's people using the name they like more for one reason or another.

Original poster is totally correct though, it depends. Bokujou Monogatari is totally acceptable because it sidesteps the weirdness with that series' English release titles. I'm going to keep saying Mahoyo, Subahibi, Jisatsu 101, and Sayooshi because they sound snappier than the English names.

Anime is also just significantly more widely talked about online and more widely distributed prior to official releases than, say, Italian or French movies where you see a roughly equal amount of foreignization.

That's how you know someone doesn't watch or talk about movies. "Profundo Russo" and "Haute Tension" are basically the defaults for many, if not most people! Nobody calls La Haine "Hate" or Satantango "Satan's Tango".
