I hope no-one is holding their breath waiting 😉

I'm impressed by some of the AI stuff being shared, but it's in a different category to the projects that have been lovingly hand crafted with much blood, sweat and tears. It's a bit like having a microwave meal, it can taste ok but will never be as nice as a well prepared and home cooked meal.

I'm banning myself from using AI at home, we're using it very heavily at work so when I eventually get around to something at home I want to step back to the "good old days" of working it out myself. I had so much fun writing Apache Canyon, I want to recapture that feeling.

Great film/book 😃 My wife claims she still has nightmares featuring Morlocks.

Probably this one, a Christmas staple when I was younger. I watched it again a couple of years ago and it's still a classic.

Astonishing! Imagine if this had been released in the 80s, I suspect you would have ended up on trial for witchcraft 😃

I was banned from watching Alien, "luckily" a friend had it on video so the ban was circumvented, I was probably around 13.

Seeing Oliver Reed transform into a werewolf on Nationwide (an early evening show back in the 70s) did it for me. No idea how old I was but way too young for that!

A break away from everything, lots going on at the moment not all good so luckily we have a "long weekend" away to distract us. Down on the south coast for some nature time to recharge our batteries.

Still a huge amount of CPU being used I guess? How much do you have left for "the rest of the game"?

Ah 💡 That clicks now, thanks for the explanation.

Having a "brain off" day, all too frequent unfortunately. I'm struggling to understand any of these explanations or how 4 screen buffers can help 😔 Is this hardware scrolling or clever plotting?

I've also been a bit sidetracked with getting a good Amiga emulation going on my Pi 500+ so have been reliving the late 80s early 90s rather than 8bit

Pixel 6 Pro here still going strong - shame it won't be getting any OS updates going forward as there is nothing wrong with it and the battery lasts a full day 😞

Have a Google of "Chrome LNA". It's a new security feature that has been causing some fun and games in particular for enterprise s/w as it's quite good at reacting to false positives 😞 Lots of "fun" at work with this one.

That looks like the same setup they had at the London Science Museum a few years back, was great to experience some old games and hardware when I visited it with my youngest. I believe Arcadian (Dave) on Stardot has something to do with running these.

I don't remember that, not even sure I had Frak on the Elk back in the day. I'll have to fire it up at some point 😃 Glad to hear your mojo has returned, mine is still off adventuring on its own somewhere - it had better be storing up lots of inspiration on it's travels or there will be trouble!

See also Shadow of the Beast on the Amiga, a great tech demo but no fun at all to play.

I remember the anticipation of getting this, followed swiftly by the disappointment. Looks wonderful, plays horribly on the Electron at least 😞 The sequel was much better if I recall. Still amazing to see what Chris Roberts went on to do after this though.

I think Musk owns or owned the original from the film. My favourite Bond car, I had the dinky toy version of it and the helicopter. A real Esprit would be an amazing weekend toy but I also suspect that "don't meet your heroes" might be an appropriate phrase.

Had a quick go this afternoon, looks lovely but I had absolutely no idea what I was meant to be doing so probably need to do some reading up before trying again. As ever, you've done an amazing job 👍

You're tempting me to try using AssemblyScript to compile my Claude built TypeScript Electron emulator to wasm. It runs pretty much full speed all the time in TS but it's quite CPU hungry so I wonder if switching it to wasm might make it slightly more efficient 🤔

Good = I'm merging two of my in progress projects Bad = It might end up being able to play Guardian better than me 🤦‍♂️

Rob Stone @rasto1968.bsky.social · 11/07/2026
More experimenting with Claude, I got it to add an mcp server to the emulator then hooked it up to my "disassemble Guardian" project. It's done a great job of filling in some of the missing gaps 😄 Next step, I want to see if it can learn how to play Guardian...

Yep, still something nice about the simplicity of 6502 though - it was such an elegant solution to the problems it was designed for and astonishing how long it lived and what it ended up being used for.

Rob Stone @rasto1968.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
I remember really struggling with Z80 code at uni, it felt so alien compared to 6502. Strangely though, I switched quite happily from 6502 to 68000 ⁉️

It has mentioned checking timing values against the FPGA project, I've not done this yet so I wasn't surprised Firetrack didn't work.
020
Rob Stone @rasto1968.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
The sound handling is still a bit buggy, it can get a bit "bubbly" is the best way to describe it. It's almost there, but does suffer from timing being off a little sometimes.

Rob Stone @rasto1968.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
Your chuckulus loading screen goes from 0 to instant 😄 Cycle times for the 6502 bit should be 100% accurate. ULA stuff has some comments about some screen timing that needs to be checked.

Elite compendium from @markmoxon.bsky.social also works but the emulator doesn't yet have a way to handle function key presses so I wasn't able to launch :)

Rob Stone @rasto1968.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
I wasn't expecting the screen blank/split code to work at all - this is the first test, also the first test of the SWRAM code too with missile command.

Rob Stone @rasto1968.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
More testing :) Chukulus from @snuggsy187.bsky.social, missile command from @tubeula.bsky.social and flappy bird from @0xc0de.bsky.social all work perfectly much to my surprise! Firetrack almost works but is a little jittery - however I know this is doing some very tricky stuff with the screen split

More work with Claude eventually resulted in disc loading working, so I was finally able to see if Apache Canyon would run on it.... It looks much better in the browser, for some reason I can't get OBS to capture nicely from the browser

It took a fair bit of prompting and lots of trial and error, it was only once it discovered Elkulator as a source of truth that the missing bits of the jigsaw puzzle clicked into place.

It came up with the retro look UI all on its own, I just asked it to create a debugger interface.
