“Safe in the stadium the glorious past / While the rest of us turn to the present at last” Colum wrote this in the late 1980s, proposing that a dedicated stadium be built for marching. Perhaps not such a bad idea after all. youtu.be/xi5KPXQIaoE?...

If Newry, Mourne and Down Council can’t keep on top of basic maintenance in Kilbroney Park, then who decided it would be a good idea for the Council to take on the responsibility for the much larger Rostrevor Forest for the next 20 years?

Disappointing to be blocked for expressing a critical view of an approach to rewilding that often comes across as dogmatic and antagonistic. Perhaps the wording was too blunt, but the rewilding movement can only benefit from open debate and critical reflection.

This attempt to commodify our public parks must be strongly resisted. It puts a financial barrier between people and nature, while pushing more cars onto surrounding roads and pavements, making them less safe for everyone. Please sign and share the petition below 👇 www.newry.ie/articles/new...

Did you know Kilbroney Park almost had a different name? When councillors named the park in 1978, Robert Linden suggested "Glen Seichis Park", the ancient name of Kilbroney Valley. It wasn't adopted, but offers a glimpse into how one of Rostrevor's best-known places might have been known today.

A "veil of secrecy" surrounds fires in the Mournes, according to Environment Minister Andrew Muir. Yet NIFRS figures show hundreds of controlled burns take place across Northern Ireland each year, with the highest numbers in Newry, Mourne & Down. Time for a more open discussion.

For over 15 years, the Green Party has fought to end the cruelty of fox hunting in Northern Ireland. We introduced the very first bill to ban hunting with dogs in 2010 - and the Assembly voted it down. 1/2
