Good news out of Iowa! Big thank you & congratulations to the advocates who worked on this! It is abundantly clear these bans are unconstitutional, but that won't stop them from trying. We need to be just as organized & just as relentless. Good job team!

INCREDIBLE Ruling! Judge Reyes just ruled that transgender people have served honorably in the military, judges Trumps trans military ban - which states trans people are inherently dishonorable - as unconstitutional and motivated by animus. Trans military members may continue to serve.

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.

President Trump's executive order to eliminate the Institute of Museum & Library Services would have disastrous effects for communities nationwide. We call on all Americans who value reading & learning to reach out to their elected leaders. Read ALA's full response: www.ala.org/news/2025/03...
ALA response to White House assault on IMLS
To dismiss the mission of an agency that advances opportunity and learning is to dismiss the aspirations and everyday needs of millions of Americans. And those who will feel that loss most keenly live in rural communities.
As seedbeds of literacy and innovation, our nation’s 125,000 public, school, academic and special libraries deserve more, not less support. Libraries translate 0.003% of the federal budget into programs and services used by more than 1.2 billion people every year. My novel Last Night at the Telegraph Club and 9 more books are under review for a statewide ban in South Carolina. There will be a hearing tomorrow 3/13. I'm not optimistic that LNATTC will survive this challenge, but it's still possible. Context here: www.malindalo.com/blog/2025/3/...

The people who read our books are kids. They don’t have money to spend. They don’t subscribe to publications that review books. They find us at the library. If the books aren’t there, it’s like they don’t exist. And that makes kids feel like *they* don’t exist.

Everything We Never Had is a modern classic. I would pair this with excerpts from the Grapes of Wrath. Students need to hear all the stories and see themselves in literature. I love how the story is multi-generational. @randyribay.bsky.social
