I think about this Jelani Cobb clip a lot in terms of how grounded black characters tend to be relative to their white counterparts

I really enjoyed the finale of that superhero detective show although it does perpetuate this trope that black heroes are street level / terrestrial whilst their white counterparts can have adventures in the stars

The experience of miscarriage can inform a role of a widow on trial for the murder of their spouse. These are the tricks of writing that I find people overlook when they see a writer’s work as autobiographical. That’s why I love interviews coz we hear from the horses mouth

I find it kinda sad when zoomer comics ppl reach for 70s punk or 90s grunge aesthetics to signify ‘counterculture’ or ‘subversion’ It’s very Mark Fisher nostalgia kills the future. Meanwhile, worryingly the new forms of subversion & provocation is coming from fringe right wing online communities

AI billionaires openly admiring that their technology will make humanity dumber & lose key skills is a wild flex to me. Dude saying that he doesn’t know his own address like it’s cool is crazy. If our governments don’t stand up for human intelligence, we the people will go Les Miz on these fuckers

The way that writing prose has levelled me up as a comic writer is wild. I used to be wiped if I wrote more than 5 pages of script in one day but after 3 years of grinding 2,500 words a day, I can easily smash out 20 pages of script in a day. I’m wiping thru this graphic novel like a beast

I’ve not listened to it in literal DECADES but that second Arctic Monkeys album is such a stone cold masterpiece. They used to be such a good band. Alex Turner needs to end his lounge singer era and get back to being the millennial Alan Bennett with a Fender Stratocaster ASAP

The tough thing about being an academic or a fan is that you can compare your fav artists body of work with the info you have gathered about their life & call it “autobiographical” but only superficially. My most autobiographical work has been things you would never guess I experienced or felt.

Went on a comic artist interview binge (Toth, Art Adams & J Scott Campbell) - all great but what made me lol was an offhand comment Campbell made about getting rid of all his geeky graphics tees becuz he decided in his 50s that he’s an adult now 😂 Never stop dressing how you want!

Hoping to finish this 2nd draft of my next novel very soon & start work an a swashbuckling historical adventure story set in East Africa & the Middle East whose big two influences are Patrick O'Brian & Hiromu Arakawa. It’s also a rebuke to an infamous Frank Miller NPR interview during 9/11

Lunch break vids: I always think of this clip from Wim Wender’s documentary CHAMBRE 666 (1982) where a post-Raiders of the Lost Ark Spielberg lays Hollywood (and commercial storytelling) all out to bare. Ironic that he was just about to drop ET

Indie comics ruined me 😂 I paid for my comics printing, con table, train ticket & hotel w/ zero expectation that I’ll get it back. My focus was being part of the community. But being an author, it’s crazy how many authors care about how big other authors book deals are etc Focus on your own work!

Nothing winds me up more than when an novelist says about making comics “you write a story & the artist will turn it into a comic” 😫 I’d stick my neck out & say that a plot is the LEAST unique thing in the comic. a comic writer shud be rated by how well they use the narrative real estate of a page!

Jason Okundaye’s piece on Jason Arday is a fab read (tinyurl.com/5n7vt5ey) on Diversity in academia vs writing, I hugely disagree with this Zadie Smith clip. An academic essay follows a clear framework becuz each point must lead logically to the next but a novel, like music, can be ANYTHING!

There are only 2 kinds of artists: trainspotters & fanatics. Trainspotters obsess over one thing (sci-fi, metal) & fanatics are passionately curious about lots of diff things. The former tend to include more autistic ppl & the latter more ADHD ppl. This vid is a perfect example of a fanatic:

On gatekeeping: in fields where talent is obvious right away (drawing, music & sports) poc have often excelled becuz their ability is hard to ignore. But in fields like writing & science, where talent takes longer to evaluate, bias & systemic barriers make it easier to overlook or undervalue them.

It’s absolutely wild how much of being an author is 60-70% writing & 30-40% filling out ‘supplier’ forms written in borderline impenetrable legalese then fulfilling a bunch of other administrative tasks so you can get paid for a workshop or talk you did. From now on, none of that! I’ll be poor! 🤣

Hunter x Hunter’s current story arc is catnip for autistic comics fans. So many compelling characters with interesting motivations, so many intricate little storylines and new nen abilities that all build onto a tapestry of a larger mystery plot that would make Agatha Christie’s head hurt.

With Nolan’s THE ODYSSEY out, I’m seeing lots of talk about superhero comics as “modern myths.” While they have archetypal heroes & epic battles, their status quo resets, reversible deaths & reluctance to profoundly grapple w/ life’s big questions make them soap operas w/ fights than true mythology.

How this blew my mind about comics. Comics are spatial or durational-in-space becuz instead of disappearing in time like film shots do, comic images persist together on the page & can be read together. The most interesting comics (Calvin & Hobbes, Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing etc) play up to this
