So…I see there’s some poets upset by the NBA longlist…like, really upset lol Here’s some unsolicited advice, pull up your britches and get on over it. If poetry is so important to you, then write poetry, not snide paragraph length comments under posts meant to congratulate others. Hope this helps.

Just finished reading My year of rest and relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh. The ending was basically perfect…definitely an unforgettable main character…kinda wish she had a name tho…2000s cinema was peak…I now know the names of way too many pharmaceuticals…I hope to write such a unique novel someday.

Instead of 31 books for #theSealeyChallenge I’m reading 1 big one—Amiri Baraka’s “SOS Poems 1961-2013” I’ve long been aware of his name and importance to Black folks, but I’ve never read his work. Now feels as good a time as any to introduce myself.

My son and I were returning books to the library earlier today, about 12 in total, and a (white) lady walked up behind me and attempted to hand me her books to drop in the slot. She noticed my confused expression and laughed then said “Oh, I thought you were the book return person”.

Okay so I finished reading Martyr! about an hour ago and I am still sitting here lowkey gobsmacked at the beauty of the writing. I know it’s not a hot take at this point, but Kaveh Akbar put his foot in that book.

I’m bout halfway through reading Martyr!, here are a few of my thoughts thus far. -Cyrus is a mess & I love it. -Orkideh is my fave character. -It’s not fair that Kaveh Akbar is so good at everything. -Lisa and Roya’s scene should’ve been longer. -Poets make the best novelists. -“Earth Martyrs” 🤯

If I as a Black man start working with Spanish-speaking folks, am I wrong if I don’t tell them I also speak Spanish? One of my old chefs called me a slur while gossiping with another cook, when I mentioned I could understand them, he got mad at me for not being honest. #AITA

Taylor said we dropping drafts today, so here we go. Here’s a sonnet inspired by the (long, long) road to the election & our nation’s habitually short memory.
A screenshot of a poem draft titled “they really almost had me. The poem is unpunctuated and reads as such:

She didn’t just fall out of a coconut tree though her ads would have you
believe something new is brewing she too exists within the context of all
that came before the shock & awe the upheavals & oustings the mother of
all bombs & all her babies the babies blown to bits the bits of shrapnel in
a refugee’s eye I swear the orange alternative being so bad I almost thought
it was 08 when press & curl took the reigns almost got fishhooked into smiling
till the good homie say we mustn’t forget the point of the role the work of the job
the aim of the sights: most lethal fighting force in the world a healthcare system
that kills us slower qualified immunity gentrified communities yes this tea is cold
i know the news is old the song long & bloody & on repeat but sometimes I need
to be reminded how they do & don’t who they will & won’t let pursue happiness
I can’t believe I almost got caught up in the glee again became again what I was
then gullible & giddy & rapping like Jeezy revving my hooptie’s engine like a
Lamborghini its sad really all it takes is a lesser devil to make us sigh with relief

Writing fiction is crazy cuz you really just have to SAY that shit. The whole shit. As a poet, I’m more practiced at alluding to that shit through metaphors involving various types of birds, but I love learning a new skill 😂

A prose poem for April 15th: "Golden Hour" from the INCREDIBLE new book, Paper Pistol by @ralpheeboi.bsky.social. No joke—get yourself a copy of this book.
Copy of the poetry collection Paper Pistol by Raphael JenkinsGolden hour

In lieu of a burial ground, I pray my son's hands will be a birthing place.
May his now tiny fists grow to know no face to call home. May dapping up his homies be the only tyranny his knuckles knock into this world —that is, of course, unless a motherfucker needs to have the lights knocked out across their entire country because their native tongue is one that speaks of my son's as a dead one. I come from a place where no one flashes a fist unless they intend to throw the thing, & so I tell him how many blocks we chased them boys to make good
on our promises, & I hope by this he knows I mean: violence is a commitment that will make you run 'til your lungs ache, & then keep going, ergo, he who commits to violence will always be running.
My boy has two dogs whom he loves to taunt, so I know he knows a useful dummy will chase whatever it feels is going too fast, bearing teeth instinctively, even though it knows you're perfectly harmless.
