Yep. I always tell people I’m a do-good lawyer, not a make-money lawyer, when they ask why I’m side hustling in concessions at a music venue even though I’m an attorney. My SIL is a biglaw partner in NYC. She makes Monopoly money, it’s crazy. But they own her mind, body, and soul. Couldn’t be me.

The Capitol reopened the next week. I commuted past the Pentagon, with its burnt and collapsed wall, twice a day. One month later, an envelope full of anthrax was opened in the office right above mine. Somewhere I still have the packet my government-issued Cipro came in.

It was the most impossibly beautiful day. I took breaks from the horror show on the TV by going outside and watching fighter jets tracing circles over DC. Will surfaced around 3pm, having never even made it to the Pentagon. He managed to get to a friend’s apartment but it took hours.

The jets scrambled to intercept Flight 93 went supersonic over my house and it sounded like a bomb. I was pulling on jeans, packing a bag and telling my parents I’d be in Memphis in 12 hours because I was bugging out of the DMV. Ultimately I stayed, partly because I didn’t know where Will was.

My then-boyfriend now husband usually drove to work via the road that goes right in front of the part of the Pentagon where the plane hit. I didn’t know if he was okay. I got a call from his mother, who didn’t even say hello when I answered. She just said, “have you seen my son.” 😭

24. I was supposed to be at my desk in the Hart Senate Office Building, right next to the Capitol. As luck would have it, I had told them I would be in late that day because I wasn’t feeling well. So I was still at my house in Alexandria when everything went down.
