A good life is a constant process of rediscovering oneself.

Writing can happen from the position of expertise, but much of what is written has started from a decision to write, with research, gathering knowledge and building experience following.

Solving hard problems is very often about breaking them down into even smaller pieces, rather than about jumping multiple steps ahead.

There’re drawbacks to staying on top of things. Namely you don’t go deep.

It’s hard to overstate this: putting in extra hours at the cost of sleep is almost never worth it. Even just looking at the next day, not considering the mid/long term.

Just discovered that Firefox (but not other major browsers as far as I can tell) has a toggle to always underscore links.

To put it into perspective: the second edition was released 3 years before Linux and vim, 8 before PostgreSQL. Emacs predates the book by 3 years.

According to the 2024 Stack Overflow Developer Survey[1], C is still more widely used than Go and Rust, despite being less appreciated. The lead of C for learning to program is even more significant, which is encouraging. 1. survey.stackoverflow.co/2024/technol...

It's surprisingly convenient to be able to lookup the standard library function and header documentation via man pages. Now I want it for other languages.

Reading The C Programming Language by Kernighan and Ritchie from 1988, it's fascinating that all code examples still work in 2025 - 37 years later - with just -ansi compiler flag (-std=c90).

In multiple incidents I've seen a circuit breaker both failing to provide a an adequate recovery opportunity and cutting off traffic that would have otherwise been served. Static thresholds means that it's a dilemma between letting a system overload and cutting too many requests in overprotection.

We do have much better tools to deal with excessive load and yet circuit breaker is still considered a “best practice”. www.envoyproxy.io/docs/envoy/l... www.envoyproxy.io/docs/envoy/l...

macOS Mail doesn’t have a way of zooming in for example, Cmd-+ just increases the font size. Unless plain text is used that is. Then font size becomes an attribute of presentation, rather than of the message (as it should really be).

Andrew @raindev.io · 03/06/2025
Also, the main point is about ownership. It doesn’t mean that software engineers now have to travel to the datacenter to replace dead hard drives. This can totally be taken care of by a white glove service.

With managed software the operational responsibilities are delegated to someone else, regardless which infrastructure the software is deployed to.
100
Andrew @raindev.io · 03/06/2025
The whole point of SaaS is that you don’t have to care about how the software is deployed, as the only way to interact with it is over APIs exposed over the network.
100
Andrew @raindev.io · 03/06/2025
“Cloud” could have been instead called “server rental”. It’s common to see independent ideas such as SaaS and managed software to be conflated with the cloud.

We should also ask ourselves - is the world of AGI the world we want to live in?
010
Andrew @raindev.io · 02/06/2025
I don’t want AGI. I want us to solve hunger, poverty, and cancer. I want renewable energy, fusion power, sustainable zero carbon economy which distributes value fairly, and supersonic travel. Thinking we can cheat and delegate these things to an AGI without putting in the effort is an illusion.

My recommendation for those at the start of their careers is to throw oneself in at the deep end. Ideally get into rocket science if you can. Alternatively, consider the options in the thread below. Dip your toes into all of them and pick a couple to go deep into.

Accessible design is often better for everyone, but not always. An example recommendation is to not rely on color to distinguish links. But a bunch of underscored links also make a page look crowded. If colorblind accessibility is enabled, browser could always underscore links, not just on hover.
110
Andrew @raindev.io · 01/06/2025
I wonder if there's a way to side-step the design/accessibility trade-off on the web by allowing the user to opt in into certain accessibility features. A browser would then enrich/change/override how page elements are presented, at cost of some design inconsistency.

A partitionless model, key-based access and replay, synchronous publishing and concurrency control would certainly go a very long way to be able to build robust event-driven systems on top without reinventing the wheel. Are you aware of any research/projects going into this direction?

Working with Python on occasion always felt like a fight with the tooling. uv on the other hand just works as it's supposed to, and when it doesn't, it's usually my fault for not reading the docs more carefully.

So here in France we have a 5G-enabled electricity meter called Linky, which naturally here in the land where people who live in heaven think they live in hell there were all kinds of protests — Linky gives you cancer, makes your kids autistic, kills your dog, sets your house on fire, and so on.
